Its amazing how many peope here talk about quag or matri being the 3rd or 4th striker, when pre calciopoli guys like zalayeta were 5th choice. And zalayeta was better than matri or quag.

Like I said those 2 have no place anymore in cl competing team.

He was a loyl soldier, nothing more.

Both matri and quags are a couple steps above him.

Zalayeta was pretty clutch for his role, and fairly versatile. It's quite difficult to find good players who will accept that role with proven class in front of you.

Zalayeta :touched:

Anyone remembers his goal against Madrid in 2005 CL? In Serie A of that era both Matri and Quag would struggle to be anything more than players for relegation clubs.

Zalayeta was amazing in his role. His loyalty and contribution to the cause can never be forgotten. But to say that Quag and Matri were worse than him is a bit of a stretch. I'd say the latter two are better strikers, just like I'd say DiVaio is levels above this generation of Italian strikers, maybe Cassano and Balotelli excluded. The likes of Gila, Borriello, Osvaldo etc.

Different generations. The entire lot of player's and style of play/level of athleticism has changed. It's like DiVaio would be miles ahead of anything right now in Italy, save DiNatale, Cassano at his peak and Balotelli. The game was differentl. The level of the league was much higher than it is today and therefore it's hard to say where ZAlayeta would fit today vis a vis Quag and Matri, who I think would easily be on par with Marco to take that 5th striker role as much as I love and respect him.

Tuz making Zalayeta out to be as good as van Basten.
Definitely.

At the very least those 3 could be on par. But To be sincere and blunt...Zalayeta´s best attribute was that he neve ever complained about being the benchwarmer of alex and trez an Ibra and whoever came.

He was the padoin of the attack.
