Del Neri era: Marotta had alot of the blame for the bad results - just look at the players he signed

Conte era: Marotta almost has no credit for the good results, it was all Conte.

I meant in terms of results on the pitch. Would we be giving credit to Beppe for bringing down the age and wage cap of the team if we were still 7th or 8th in the league? I have my doubts.

The model only looks good when you're winning.

That said, I think he's grown into the role a little better than how he started. He has done well with some signings, but so far he has been par for the course IMO.




If you re-read where this discussion stems from, youll find that my bone of contention isn't with him staying, but receiving a whole lot of credit for where we are today after two seventh place finishes. I believe that the main catalyst for this success has been Conte.

Also, you probably know by now that I'm not a big fan of Marrotta even though I was really happy when he first arrived, but my opinion of him changed over the course of his first couple of seasons here.

OK, so what was your opinion of Moggi in the late 90's when Juve weren't winning anything?

He signed Del Neri who he had achieved fourth place with at Samp, knew full well the coach was an exponent of the 442, and dint get him any wingers or fullbacks needed to play that formation effectively. Adding to which he loaned out Trez while we paid part of the pages and sold Diego against the coach's wishes.

Agnelli hired Conte, before which I think Marrotta wanted Mazzarri, since they had worked together in the past.

Conte blocked the sale of Pepe and Bonnucci, players bought for an estimated 25m the season before by Beppe. When Marrotta failed to sign a CB, a glaring need that season, we looked at Barzagli from within the resources - a player who had come as Legro's replacement, not as a starter. I feel Conte had a lot more clarity and a far more outspoken approach than Del Neri, to voice his ideas and opinion. Just my two cents on the matter, I'm sure people view it differently.

Sometimes a transfer will fail even though it made a lot of sense and was an absolutely correct move when it was made.

You mean the team that had to deal with Del Piero's career changing injury? The one that had just obliterated everything in sight to make three consecutive CL finals. And not winning anything, included throwing away the title at Perugia on the last day, and finishing second the year after. Big difference from finishing seventh.

Diego and Trezeguet moved on to be replaced by DiNatale, who we hadn't got clearance from, before being rejected By Borriello and ending up with Quag. A player who people complain about till date. And for as much as I love Quag, Trezeguet and Diego are better than everything Marrotta signed that season.

Pepe and Krasic weren't bad for Del Neri's system. It's just that they they were meant for the right side.

I think Del Neri made a pretty good go of it with the team he had, playing Marchisio out wide left because of the absence of a proper lw. The team if you remember, was fighting for second with Quag on fire. Up until Quagliarella's injury, we were in the race for a top 3 finish but that's only coz he was pretty much carrying the attack that otherwise had the ever dependable Del Piero, Amauri and Iaquinta. Can't just blame Luigi alone for the failure of an imbalanced squad at his disposal. Martinez was the option for both SS and Lw that year if IIRC, while we loaned out Giovinco for 3.5m.

The point there was not just about Barzagli being our breakout star actually being brought in as a sub. The point being that we had a glaring need for a CB and Marrotta failed to procure one. Remember the Alves deadline day saga? Exactly one year after the last day Quag saga.

But yet, Baggio, they still had players such as Inzaghi and later Trezeguet in their prime when they finished 7th in 98-99, and 2nd in 99-00, and 00-01. So, who was to blame for that at the time? And although Del Piero being injured in that first season was indeed crushing, they had the talent there. Especially a certain player whose initials are ZZ

I think that it is safe to say that in regards to Conte, regardless of who actually hired him, that Juve lucked out on that as well, for all the talk about how lucky Juve were with certain players.


I remember full well that a lot of people, and not just including the obvious ones on this forum, were very concerned about whether he could make the step up. Everybody was hoping that he could, but his resume wasn't exactly spectacular coming into this job, with his greatest achievements being bringing two Serie B teams into promotion

Of course. I had doubts as well.

It just continues to amaze me how it's always one guy making the decision and nothing is ever discussed & agreed. Well, that's what I get from reading tuz.

Hiring Conte is Agnelli's decision.
Not spending x on player y is Marotta's decision.
Getting rid of Ale is Agnelli's decision.
Signing Borriello is Conte's decision.
Bendtner's arrival was decided by Marotta.

Not that it matters, but there's a slight difference between (having) an idea and agreeing with everyone involved & acting on it.

If people really think hiring Conte was the decision of one man (against all others), then that just goes to show how clueless most fans are. And that doesn't even have anything to do with Agnelli coming up with the Conte idea first.
