What did you expect him to say once the deal fell through?! Anyway, Marrotta said not too long ago that he was very interested in moving here. I can only imagine that when we decided to go all guns blazing with a 30m offer, it also had to do with the fact that the player was open to moving too. Old discussion anyway.
Actually I understand now why Marotta said we don't want him anymore. He doesn't want to come and with this attitude I'm sure Conte would block this transfer. I was too all for getting him in the summer (he was my number 1. choice) but now I don't want him here. Players need to have the will or they are useless.
Honestly I don't see any decent players 'possible' to get right now for CF. This is a bit worrying but on the other hand we should be fine without new one. My only concern is the fact Conte stuck to 3-5-2 which doesn't always work. If Conte starts to use 4-3-3 again we should do good.
This way we could use players like Giovinco , Lichtsteiner and De Ceglie in a better way which is important as they're our squad players. Switching should make us less predictable which should be enough for our current strikers to do the job.

What you are indirectly saying is that we should only believe the media when stories come out about (big, expensive) players being available & wanting to join us, but not when the opposite is written. At least, that's what I get from reading most of your posts in this thread.

I'd like to clarify, that I have never supported the theory of having a team full of prima donnas. Nor spend excessively. But, the situation we are in creates the need gap to make an exception. An unbeaten team flatters to decieve our weaknesses, which will be exposed in this kind of season. The kind of season we need to be getting used to year after year. After the departures of core players like Trezeguet and Del Piero, we have to plug that gap, not just quantitavely but qualitatively as well. Playing catch up in Europe is going to be a bitch if those needs are deferred. A top player is no longer a luxury for this team, he is a necessity on many levels. Please don't create or support the line of thought that we can't spend. I find it silly and filled with a sense of resignation given how frivolously we have spent the last three years. You could have had at least 1 marquee signing on the salary and for the transfer fee that Marrotta thinks is impossible. I say this as a fact: with better negotiation skills, and a firm sense of priority, we could easily have had a marquee player. Unfortunately, we don't have the balls to spend big money because we are scared of the risk, and see it wiser to spread out the investment. That time has now come to an end. Every mercato hereon in is going to require a quality signing and those don't come cheap. Talk about wise opportunities all you want, but when it comes to a pool of players in the forward category there are very few that have the ability and talent to hit the ground running in any league in the world, and make a difference. Those players cost money, irrespective of whiich league we are from. They'd cost the same to Barcelona, Real Madrid, United, Munich, Milan, Inter or Juve.
I think its pitiful that in three years we couldn't find a replacement for Trezeguet, I shudder to think what they'd do to fill Ale's shoes in a respectable manner with this approach. Wise opportunities create a foundation. A top player needs to crown it and we cannot escape that anymore if we want to win the CL, that is.
It's true that we do need a top player, but the club and Marotta are fully aware of that. You can't just label the economic aspect of top players costing too much as nonsensical, regardless of how much we've spent in the past. If you look at income and expenses of the italian top clubs, where we're the leader of the pack, you'll see that we're still some way behind the true top spenders (Madrid, United, Chelski, City etc.) in what they have in their coffers. Let's say a top player will cost us 30 million euros and that he will command a 5 million per year salary after taxes (which in Italy will force the club to spend 10 million euros per year in salaries for that player, as high earners in the country get hit with up to 50 % taxation). Say he signs a 5 year deal. Then the deal will be worth 80 million euros. 30 in transfer fee, 25 million in salaries and 25 million in taxes.
The infrastructure of italian football, it's market-position and the taxation rules in Italy are all setbacks which make it impossible to truly compete with the other european big boys at this time. If you take that into consideration, Juventus is doing one hell of a job at the moment.

Without an instinctive top scorer up front and the likes of Quag
and Matri instead, we do look kinda pitiful at the final third. In a way it's embarrassing for a club of Juve's stature not being able to bring home a more comfortable win with the clinical approach required from a top level team, in these sort of games.
All the depth in the world cannot compensate for this, specially at the highest level (where we want to be).
Highly doubt we can go very far this way in Europe.
