Let me see if I can make some sort of futile attempt at a balancing act here.
Let's take a look at the outright purchases that he made, one by one.
Milos Krasic- I would say that all in all, that was a terrific purchase, and I think that most would agree with this. Some people would say that Krasic wanted to come to Juve all along and wouldn't go anywhere else. That si fine, but the fact of the matter is that the deal still has to get done, and it takes a club willing to sell him, regardless of what the players stated intentions are. In the end, he could have complained all he wanted that Juve was the only place that he wanted to go to, but if a better offer came along for him from one of the more elite clubs in Europe, you can bet your ass that Milos would have changed his tune.
Jorge Martinez- I like him as a player, but in hindsight, I don't like him at juventus. Whether it is due to his injuries, or the misuse of him out of position, whatever the case may be, this was a bad signing. I think the guy is very talented, but it just doesn't equate to what Juve is trying to do. he played sparingly at winger at Catania, but was used primarily upfront as a SS in a 4-4-2 or on the right in a 4-3-3
Leonardo Bonucci- He has had his good moments, and certainly his bad. In all, I think, and a lot would agree, that his season has been fairly positive.
Marco Storari- Anyone who complains about this purchase seriously needs to get a clue. They would be relegation strugglers without him for the first half of the season.
Luca Toni- Drastically cut his wages to come to Juventus. Drastic pay cut through June of 2012
Loans with options to buy:
Alberto Aquilani- The great mystery. Played very well the first few months of the season, and has tailed off considerably. Is it because he's being asked to play in a quasi Regista position at Juve? Who knows. All the talk about Juve buying him outright at the end of the season right now is just that. Talk. And if it is the case that they do go out and need to find another midfielder, then so be it, as they didn't spend a dime to get him for this year. Aside from salary, it will be no money wasted.
Fabio Quagliarella- Look, I don't care if he was the first, second, or 15th option. Borrielo was not coming on a loan only deal, Milan wasn't having it. DiNatale didn't want to come, and Dzeko, we all have the sudden EU rule change to blame for that. Fact is, the guy was a godsend before he got hurt. He turned his style into substance, producing goals and all around great play that a lot of pundits thought he could always do, but was never able to put it together. He put it together at Juventus, and its a fucking damn shame that he got hurt. It took the club literally 2 months to rebound from his loss
Alessandro matri- Not only is he the best january purhcase in Serie A, but its not that much of a stretch to say that he was the best january purchase in all of Europe. He is unfazed by the spotlight, and is showing skills that some people knew that he always had. And as far as his price is concerned, that is the price you pay when you want to buy a player of real quality in the Winter transfer market.
Marco Motta- Fucking. Disaster. No more needs to be said except for the fact that it only cost 1.25 million for his services. If you've been to Italy, you can barely get a tank full of gas for that amount these days.
Armand Traore- I don't know. You tell me. 1.5 million for this.
Simone Pepe- Yes, he's limited. I get that. The guy is also a battler who gives his all every time he's out there, even if sometimes it looks like he's running around like aheadless chicken. He's a good squad player, which I believe was the intent all along.
Now, let's take a look at the players that were sold.
Diego- Pardon me for being blunt, but I simply don't understand the fascination with him. I don't care about "Well, they got him for 25 million, because he was a young player". The fact is the guy simply was not as good as everyone loves to make him out to be. I honestly think that people are more impressed with the idea of Diego than they are with the player himself. Keep in mind, this guy went 25 games in all competitions last year, where he only scored one goal during that entire stretch. After his 2 goal performance in week 2 last year. he didn't score again until november, and then didn't score again until late February/ early march, and then consequently did nothing the last 9 games of the season. All that for 25 million dollars. Was that money well spent? Did they not try to formulate a squad around him last year, and this is what he puts up? So they sold him back to the league where he actually accomplishes something. Godd for him. Glad he's happy. I couldn't care less.
David Trezeguet- Look, this went all wrong. I know that. I don't really have much else to say about it.
Sebastian Giovinco- Some people would say that this went all wrong as well. I will disagree with this, and here is why. Was Giovinco guaranteed 90 minutes every week with Juve? A Juve that was trying to rise from the dreadful ashes from last season? No one knows. Therefore, he was given his opportunity to play every week. I know he brings a lot of excitement when he is out there. The bottom line though, is that a player has to produce. He had a fantastic january. Absolutely killer. 4 out of his 5 goals were scored in January. And one goal in week 2. And 2 assists. all this while being the focal point of Parma's attack, being their engine and main creator. If he was doing that at Juventus, where in essence he has had one great month all season long, people would be calling for his head.
In essence there have been hits and misses, but the only truly expensive mistake this year has been Martinez. If anyone can find a director who gets it right every single time, let me know. or better yet, let the Board of Directors in Truin know.
He doesn't get a free pass from me, but he gets more rope than others are willing to give in order for him to hang himself. This summer's mercato will be the true test.

A. Course it matters J. You can't be shooting in the dark all the time. Quag was not even his second choice. It just so happened he was in the form of his life when Marrotta took up the option. There is no doubt he was the right player but then he should've been a priority over everyone else Marrotta was rejected by. Had that been the case, and had he been more organised in his approach, he would've had Quag cheaper, than a splash the cash save the day purchase.
B. Again, no doubt a necessary buy. But, all in hindsight. Quag was injured in the first week of Jan. Matri was bought on the last day of the Market, while Toni was snapped up almost immediately. Again, he thought that would be enough till he saw the string of results three weeks into Quag's injury. Had there been a single minded focus to draft in a quality striker, Matri's negotiations wouldn't have been as desperate either. Agreed January, is the sellers market. But having no contingency plans in place can only make the buyers job harder espesh when he saw how Amauri, Iaquinta were in the midst of a drought cum injury crisis. And as an aside, still Matri as a January buy at 18 mil has impressed me more than Bonnucci has for 15 mil - a target Marrotta had all the time in the world to get at a more nominal price.hat's then again, that's a tangent.
C. If Marrotta deserves a second go at the market. Then why didn't Diego in the Juve shirt? Despite Del Neri making it clear he could accommodate Diego in a 4-4-1-1, he was sold. Much to his own dismay too, after an impressive pre season. It's conjecture how it would've turned out, no doubt. But are you trying to tell me Diegos quality is up for debate against someone like Martinez for example? And offloading Giovinco for what? He wasn't on a heavy wage, didn't cost 12 million to buy and was younger than his replacement. While Trez is offloaded while we still pay a fair bit of his salary. Seriously.
Point is. We had the money, we just didn't have a clear idea of what to do with it. I think Marrotta's been shooting in the dark and its not something he can afford to do much longer if this club is to finds its rightful place again.

True. I agree. But my two cents on that situation though, are in the post above. We had the money, we should've spent it earlier instead of waiting for Floro Flors to reject us. Would've given us greater scope for negotiation. And more importantly, save us from losing three match days or so to Amauri and Iaquinta.
