Very stupid move. Wages nowadays are very big and 1mln per year is not a lot since it'd be a long term deal. He's also tipped to be a huge player.

It would be like not paying 1mln per year for old young Hamsik.

Many our players have undeserved wages and they earn more than 2mln (Sali, Grosso). I think we'll regret this.
Grosso and Salihamidzic are a terrible comparison, guys who have played hundreds of matches, CL and/or World Cups, plus they don't earn 'more than 2m'. Just what has Piazon done to 'deserve' this wage?

If we say 'yeah ok, €1m'. Then what do Chelsea do? €1.5m. So what do we do then, keep going higher?

TBH fuck this kid and more likely, his agent.

So people would be okay with paying a primavera player (who has played a grand total of 0 senior games) 1 million € a year? Which may end up costing us 2 million € a year (taxes?, I'm not familiar with the specifics of what was offered).

I'm all for snapping up young talents, but the whole point in doing so is getting them before they become ridiculously expensive, simply because they still have everything to prove.

Interesting stuff.

Had Juve agreed to Piazon's €1m a season salary, only 4 players in current squad would have been on less. De Ceglie, Rinaudo, Manninger, Traore.

Piazon would have also earned same salary as Marchisio presently does at Juventus. Inter's Coutinho nets €0.5m a year.

Yes, let's not do that.

Let's sign Grosso, Martinez etc. and give them double of that because they are proven players.
Oh right. It's black or white thing again.

You know, just because I think that giving a youth player (who may or may not amount to a decent player) a salary of 1 million a year is a bad (terrible actually) move, doesn't mean I agree(d) with most of our recent moves.

Established players deserve a certain level of salary, that is correct. For example, Milos Krasic (I'll use a good signing to counter your bad signing theory) was given €1.8m, and he is an established international player. If you can predict how players are going to play in the future then maybe you should have Marotta's job? Look at the start of the Grosso thread (when he was actually) bought, 90% positive feedback to his signing.

One other thing, Juventus' annual wage bill is less than €100m (I count ~€60m but whatever), Chelsea's is around €200m.

Smart decision, Piazon is nobody now and not deserve such a big salary. Yes, maybe he will be a very good player in the future, but not a good person. I like Krasic which low his salary to move to our club.

It makes an interesting argument. But football has changed, and if we apply the law of diminihing returns here, it's going to look like an awfully bad business decision, because at 6m, we could've made a killing on this kid had he turned out to be the best thing since sliced bread, and even if he hadn't, we'd have a market for him. While it's not the 1m that's really in question, but the principle of the matter, I feel we as a team need to realise that talent comes at a price. It happens in all of pro sport, it happens in the corporate world and even in the movie industry. These businesses are highly inflated and everybody wants a piece of the pie. Milan paid 20m for Pato in similar circumstances if I'm not mistaken, we're willing to pay up to 5 times more to get Neymar here when the difference in skill may or mayn't be in proportion, also assuming neither have European club experience, so what's driving us to say let's snap Neymar up? Surely, a +-3 year gap can't be the defining factor. And what kind of salary would we be happy to give Neymar? Let's be realistic. We can't expect to prise away youth anymore the way we used to. Were Juventus, but our foundations aren't as solid as they used to be. Instead of paying 12m for an established, experienced Jorge Martinez (& Luca Toni types), i rather we spend half of that and pay a comparatively smaller salary to Piazon. So if we want to play good football, focus on youth and have a profitable model, then we've got to take risks like this. Coz if we don't, someone else will.

PS: It is an interesting argument on the whole, while I do think there is an ethical standing in what Marrotta says, I do feel, it's pointless as a stance given the condition of the big clubs in Europe. If this was 2006, we would've snapped him up, maybe on our terms too, but things have changed. We're at the back of the line, and need to attach the premium players want, to be a part of our 'project.'
