Right now I don't think we are in the market for high end 28/29 year old players, we need a leap in stature. Decent foreign players like Krasic sure, guys we can develop, but not the signings Inter make. I don't think the Krasic's signing shows we can compete with Inter, Krasic and Dzeko are the maximum we can aim for right now, very good players at smaller sides. Eto'o, Lucio, Sneijder, not right now. You must see the difference between these players. Not just ability, but their standing in the game. I haven't revoked my points, I said Serie A experience is important, but isn't necessary for every player.

Dzeko will likely cost at least double the 15ME or so that Inter paid for a 25 y/o Sneijder. It's not like we can't get quality players from larger teams too.

I don't think Inter paid a ton for Lucio either... a lot of the rumors were in the 5-7ME range, though I don't think they ever released the official price. That price represents excellent value, and considering how badly we need CL football (given the new stadium opening etc., as well), plugging a reasonably priced veteran or two into the lineup - especially into our defense - for a few years might be wise. A solid 28-29 year old defender could give us 4-5 seasons of quality!

A 28-29 year old forward like Cassano could help carry this club into the CL through some tough transitional years.

Also, with the poor spending habits of certain large clubs the past few years, and the amount of player turnover that's happening, there have been a few pretty good deals - no need to limit ourselves to one strict philosophy.

Anyway, I just think that our management needs to assess each situation on it's own specific circumstances. No need to generalize.

Why do we still not have a real LB?

One of the great mysteries of the universe... why nobody in the Juventus hierarchy has been able to identify the extent of our need or, obviously, the solution to our problems at FB. It's beyond ridiculous.

I agree with your points although it's not so much about the money, it's about getting players to leave big clubs to come and play for a Juve team that is trying to build. Cassano falls into the category of 'players at smaller clubs'.

You're right buddy, there will certainly be times when we have difficulty getting players to come to a rebuilding club... but at the end of the day, this is Juventus, and it's not like we don't have some drawing power. Whether players will decide to leave big clubs or not, will most likely depend on how much playing time they're receiving.

I think the long term possibilities for the club (given our low debt, new stadium, and some quality youth) will inspire quality players to give us a shot. There could be a certain appeal (for some) to being one of the protagonists in revitalizing a former world powerhouse. We'll definitely miss out on more than a few players though - and many, many more if we can't qualify for CL 2 years in a row.

Hopefully GDN can get this thing turned around, and prove himself at the club; obviously a coach and his system will be highly influential in the recruitment of new players.

As for my including Cassano in the discussion, you're right he's at a smaller club, but his addition was more directed towards the "Right now I don't think we are in the market for high end 28/29 year old players, we need a leap in stature," comment.

He's undeniably a high end 28/29 year old, who I would personally love to see at Juventus. I think he's certainly got 3-4 more very good years in him. Provided we get some reliable fullbacks, Cassano is a player that could make the difference for us.

I dont think its a matter of spending cash to buy players of high quality at a certain age. I think we can attract a load of players its just that our salary budget is what needed to be adjusted. Now that we have three large salary burdens of our balance sheet we'll be much more competitive in luring players, especially those that don't cost relatively too much but have high salary requirements. Preferably purchasing younger players with those requirements will be easier so that we can sell them if they are flops instead of them turning into Grosso or Brazzo (those guys dont even have that high of salaries-but still too high to be non-squad players)

'Del Neri's work is bearing fruit'

Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta believes we are beginning to see signs of progress under Gigi Del Neri.

The Bianconeri recorded a 0-0 draw away to treble winners Inter last night and appear to have generated a degree of consistency in their performances.

Interviewed on Radio anch'io lo Sport, Marotta said: “The team has been renewed a lot following the club's guidelines.

“We lowered the age profile and the wages, creating a model this way.

“I believe that after two months the work of Del Neri is bearing fruit. When a player or a director wears the Juventus shirt, they know that they are wearing years of glorious history.

“Del Neri is an expert who succeeds in managing situations in the best way. We always ask for a foreign Coach as if they bring who knows what with them, but I believe that the Italian product is at the maximum also on a coaching level.”

Marotta also reflected on last night's Derby d'Italia, which was remarkable for its atmosphere of fair-play.

“I believe that sport is a social phenomenon and yesterday we assisted in a positive advert for it.

“I underlined the harmony between the two teams and the direction of the referee who helped the evening pass pleasantly.

“The players are serious professionals and they understood that their job mustn't just be that of being competitive, but also being fair.”
