And again, how is that Marotta's fault? No SD is supposed to account for 5 injuries to crucial players - when shit like this happens you just ride out the storm. We've got quality depth for the league + CHL, just not when Chiellini, Pirlo, Marchisio, Vucinic are injured and Asamoah is in Africa. Even if he knew that these issues were present before the winter transfer window, providing capable backup for those players is not a wise strategy. Players who are good enough so we don't feel a remarkable drop in quality on those positions are first team players, they demand first team player salaries and transfer sums. To cover up for these injuries we'd have to invest 50 m atleast in players that we won't use regularly when our starters return.

Again, the CHL is a big transition for any team, just look at Manchester City who have failed horribly at it two times in a row, despite having unlimited transfer budget and pretty much getting every player they want.
