Bonucci is an even better example. I'm not against the idea of buying such players. But in short the last part of the interview was " It's not the right time to spend big ammounts on football players so we want to refresh the tradition of buying players from smaller clubs who will potentially shine".
Now that's good if you have a good team and if the new guy fails you'll have a replacement. But this Juve needs more than that. We can not depend on the hope that guys like Pepe and Martinez will become as good as the players Marotta mentioned, who also came from smaller teams.
Plus, in the Italian smaller teams I don't see many promising faces. There are players like Hamsik, Pastore (and I'm not sure if we can count these two as small team players, especially since they're just as expensive as players from big teams), Bonucci etc, but not enough of those in the league so we could concentrate on finding talent from Italy's smaller teams.
Of course, it is not easy to see emerging talents because they haven't arrived yet. The players you mentioned are virtually established, international players. The historic players Marotta mentioned were no such players, although I agree with your sentiment for the some of the players we have signed, like Pepe (26) and Martinez (27). They could be good but won't ever be great. Motta and Bonucci, slightly different.
If you look at how we have tried to do business it has always been the same way, younger talents and the odd big signing, it'll be similar this year but we also had to bring more players for the squad in after last years debacle.
I think he is looking more along the lines of Zambrotta, Camoranesi, Zidane, Inzaghi, Tacchinardi etc.
