Arsenal's Gilberto emerges as top Juventus target

Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva is looming as a priority target for Juventus ahead of the summer market.

The ball-winning Brazilian has the characteristics that Juve coach Didier Deschamps is missing from his midfield this season. Deschamps is anxious to fill the void left by Patrick Vieira last summer and after admitting that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard's asking price was too high, is now focusing on bringing Gilberto to Turin.

The midfielder is contracted to Arsenal until 2009, however he could take advantage of a FIFA law in the summer to leave for a knockdown fee - in the region of £2 million - with him moving inside the final two years of his existing deal.

Gilberto is the best ball winner we're negotiating right now. He is, without a doubt, better than M.Diarra and Frings.

The new FIFA law states that:

Players who have served three years of a contract they signed when aged under 28 can buy themselves out - as long as they give 15 days' notice to a club at the end of the season.

The fee would be based on their wages rather than a full transfer value, which would be nearer £2M for a player like Gilberto Silva.

Juventus to talk Gilberto terms with Arsenal

Juventus will discourage Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva from buying out the remaining two years of his contract in the summer.

The Brazilian, whose contract expires in 2009, can leave Emirates stadium for around £2 million in June thanks to a FIFA transfer law. However, while Juve are keen to sign Gilberto, they do not want to offend Arsenal and are happy to negotiate a transfer fee for the midfielder.

Tuttosport says Juve director Roberto Bettega has already held talks with Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein and knows the Gunners are seeking £7 million for Gilberto.

I don't know why but I feel that somehow our management is skipping targets in order to get an easy 'catch'. We were aiming for a midfield rebuilt, after currently we can compete for a place in Top 10 in seria A. There were interviews with Del Piero and Buffon explaining that they will stay if they see desire and actions from the management toward building a TOP TEAM. And doing so in a FAST PACE.
Now we are commenting over Gilberto Silva, which was qualified as a top-class player already on this thread. Yes he can make a good game, he can sometimes be a class of his own - but do not fool yourselves he is not top class, nor a world one. Patrich Vieira is a top-class player. He is the kind of player that could give inspiration and impose his will on others, but Gilberto is not. I do fully appreciate the fact that we are talking about playing with young, inexperienced team mates like Paro for instance, where class is a virtual value but we have Nedved right next to him, and Del Piero and Camoranesi and (even) Zanetti. So in a short we do not need him. Are we selling someone? Why Gerrard is 'expencive' when Berlusconi is talking about Ronaldhino? Why and this is a BIG WHY, he took Ronaldo for 8 mln. euros and we want to take for supposedly higher amount (7 mln. pounds) Gilberto Silva????
I wouldn't say which one of these players is truly world-class because I am a JUVE FAN
:agree: :agree: :agree:

Juventus close to Gilberto deal with Arsenal

Juventus are in advanced talks with Arsenal for midfielder Gilberto Silva.
Corriere dello Sport says Juve have all but agreed a fee with the Gunners for the Brazilian, who is entering the final two years of his current contract.

Gilberto could have bought out his deal this summer, but Juve are said to be close to striking an agreement with the London giants over a £2.5 million fee for the experienced ball-winner.

To good to be true. Other than the fact the fee is ridicolously small for a player of Gilberto's skill, y would he want to leave Arsenal, a team that is most likely to be in CL next season, for Juve?

Id love this move, since being older and experienced, he would increase our chances for a legitimate push for the scudetto, all the while expiring in a few years for our youngsters to return from loans and be able to hold a starting spot for Juve.

Frings, Gilberto Silva ? Really are these players superior to the much maligned Emerson? Imo of course not. Personally at Arsenal I am more impressed with the athleticism of Dialby. But rumours are always interesting to an extent
