Gigi is a General. You can't replace someone like him on the battlefield. The guy is a leader and if you put a competent backline in front of him, see what happens.

Look, I love Gigi, I was a goalkeeper too in my young(er) days and he was one of my idols (along with Peruzzi, I loved him), but the fact is that we can not compete financially with the worlds biggest clubs (Barca, Real, Man Utd, Chelsea, etc, maybe even Inter).

We cant afford to lose out on returning the money spent on players as we dont have enough new money to invest every season. It's all about getting a good player, playing him for a few years and selling him just before his value starts dropping significantly.

Gigi will have to be replaced sooner or later, the only question is what we can get from his sale to replace him, 40 mil € now or 0 later.

Gigi has been injured a lot this season, and IMO our performances werent that closely related to his form, that is we werent significantly worse with Manninger instead of him.

We need a small revolution this summer if we want to get back to winning ways, and imo it's the right time to replace Gigi and use the money from his sale to get a replacement and spend it on new players.

Would we be much worse if we had another goalkeeper combined with making the rest of the squad stronger? It can be argued that Gigi is one of the best but perhaps not clearly the best goalkeeper in the world anymore, and their form fluctuates, as with any other player. Julio Cesar was for a while in better form than Gigi, it's all normal.

IMO, we would not be weaker, we could be even stronger if we rejuvenated the squad. While there may not be a goalkeeper quite as good as Gigi, a slightly worse, but younger goalkeeper, coupeled with adding new players on key positions, could mean that the team as a whole would be better.

IMO it's time to sell him if we get a decent 25-30 mil € offer, or maybe we could get even more from Man City or someone else.

Look, we are not Real Madrid, we dont have an endless pocket, we need to sell our players as soon as they pass their prime in order to get some of the money we spent back and invest in new players.

TBH Buffon isnt getting any better, he has reached his prime and he can only go downhill. He has also been injured a big part of the season. We will have to replace him in a few years anyway, the only difference is whether we will get 30-40 mil € for him now or a bug zero in 5 years.

IMO, the time has come for a change of generations.
I know what you mean Zlatan , but our task should be replacing the board because (you mentioned that we're not real madrid) we'll be in a situation to sell Chiellini, Melo, Diego, Sissoko next year to compensate their poor handling again.

Of course, I agree that the board has to go, but regardless of that IMO it would be time to cash in on Gigi and start rebuilding the team again.

How are you so sure we can't compete financially?

How are you so sure we can't compete financially?

Do we have a 90000 fan capacity stadium? Do we have billionaire backers? Do we have the world's biggest stars that sell merchandise? Etc, etc, it's ridiculous to say we can spend the same amount of money as Barca, Real, Manyoo, Chelsea, Man City...

If Buffon wanted to leave, to go to a team fighting for the highest honours, I would wish him well and take the money for the club. However, that is a big IF HE WANTS TO GO. He would deserve that chance and we would be rightly compensated for the loss of a goalkeeper who has been and remains, one of the greatest of history.

If he wants to stay, then we must keep him. Presently we have two world class players. Buffon and Chiellini. We have at least 7 or 8 players who are miles off the standard we expect for Juve, and surely, THEY should be sold first....Grygera, Tiago, Camo, Poulsen, Momo, Grosso, De Ceglie, Amauri, Iaquinta, Zebina, Molinaro. ALL of them should be sold before we even consider selling buffon. Lets get rid of the definitely awful assets, before selling one of only two prized assets. And see what we get for that lot...Tiago, Poulsen, Amauri, De Ceglie, Iaquinta...all surely would go for at least 5m???

Buffon won't wish to go to City. He deserves more class...and would surely only consider Man U in england. Barca and real both have decent keepers. And I don't reckon Santo Buffon would ponder kroutland.

I hope he stays.

When will people learn that too much money in football world doesn't make much difference.

Doesn't Real Madrid, Chelsea, Milan and Inter ring a bell?

Fact is, we can sell Buffon for 50m but only god knows how we will spend the 50m and while we will fill some gaps with this amount of money we will also have to leave another goalkeeper gap because no one can replace Gigi.

And whoever thinks that Goalkeepers don't make much differences are mistaken. Ask Milan about this.

When you have a squad as weak as ours is, it doesn't make sense to sell one of, if not your very best player. Also, 25M euro is a complete joke... especially with this board's recent transfer record.

Amauri, Melo, Diego... I obviously wouldn't trade any of them for Gigi straight up, and they're all right in that general 25M price range. I think that the Diego purchase was a good one, and while I believe that Melo will rebound under proper guidance, a strong argument can be made that 2 of those transfers were effectively disastrous, given the price and return. Although I do think Melo deserves a chance to come good next year... I still have faith in his ability; he desperately needs a strong manager to maximize his potential.

Gigi will be our captain when Alex retires, and we're in great need of his leadership. Selling Buffon for anything less than 40-50M euros would be an absolute disaster, and frankly, as long as he wants to stay I wouldn't even sell him for that amount. He's a legend who has earned/deserves the loyalty and respect of this club.

If it was my choice, we'd see another 5 years of Buffon at Juventus... minimum. In fact, I hope that he's our keeper until he decides to hang up his cleats for good. Forza Gigi!

Absolutely. If he himself wants to move, we should let him. But I don't want us to go around actively looking for somewhere to ship him off too.

:delpiero:

I don't even want to imagine where we'd be right now without Buffon. And I'm not only talking about this season, but ever since beginning with the Serie B adventure.

On a related subject: do we still own part of Mirante? Always liked him.

Nobody on here knows how much money the owners are going to put into the club.
