We have had some wonderful goal keepers.
Jim Leighton played for Scotland until he was about 40 and he played for Man Utd and Theo Snelders was in the Dutch squads for the 90 and 94 World Cups just to name a couple.
Like I say, Buffon is the best keeper of his generation, but you can't say he is definitely the best ever.

Buffon The Best, Cech Finished – Galli
Former Milan and Italy goalkeeper Giovanni Galli believes that Petr Cech is no longer the same since his horrific injury in 2006, while he says that Gianluigi Buffon is the best shot-stopper in the world.
On Sunday night Cech made an horrendous error which played a massive part in the Czech Republic’s 3-2 defeat to Turkey that saw them eliminated from Euro 2008.
Galli believes that Cech has never been the same since he fractured his skull playing for Chelsea against Reading in October 2006, and he thinks that the goalkeeper will never return to the top.
"I must say that after that incident he is no longer at his old levels", Galli told the Corriere dello Sport.
"Buffon is without doubt the best. Apart from the error on the first Dutch goal he has been phenomenal.
“[Bogdan] Lobont is the next best, I like him a lot. Edwin Van der Sar has never convinced me.
"Iker Casillas? He has never convinced me much either. Artur Boruc? Had he had an Italian school he would have been among the top five in the world.
“He has the physique, the reflexes, courage, but Celtic want 12 million euros. The Swiss lad Benaglio is interesting.”
Galli won 19 caps for Italy, winning a World Cup winners medal in 1982, and playing at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon looked back on the day of the decisive victory against France, indicating the moment when he knew things would end well for the Azzurri.
"You know what happened when we arrived at the stadium? We were about to hit the French bus, which had taken a big curve," he said. "But then they did the real damage, when they hit another vehicle. At that moment I understood it could be a positive sign for us and I wasn't wrong..."
The keeper also revealed that he actually watched the game against Holland again to get a good feeling ahead of the match against France.
"In the afternoon I went back to my room and re-watched the game against Holland. Call me crazy, but I actually gained confidence after watching that because I saw that our performance was not as bad as the 3-0 result suggested.
"After we had coffee president Abete paid us a visit. His words, which were very touching, galvanised us."

Buffon enjoys underdog status

Gianluigi Buffon is happy to take the underdog role against Spain despite Italy’s World Cup holder credentials.
“We have great respect for Spain, but also know that our history will play a part in this encounter,” said the goalkeeper.
The Furia Roja are arguably the favourites to go through after qualifying from their group with a 100 per cent record.
“It is better for us if they are considered the favourites. Then we will see at the 90th minute if that is still the case.
“They are a great rival and it is right to have a certain amount of fear around them, but only as much as they have around us.
“The fact they haven’t beaten us in competitive matches since 1920 could be a problem, because taboos are there to be broken. We just hope that record carries on for a few more years.”
Considering the fine form of Spain’s strikers David Villa and Fernando Torres, Buffon could be in for a busy night.
“Villa is one of the best in the world at striking the ball, while Torres has also shown he is strong. They are players who have been on the international stage for many years and we know them well.”
The goalkeeper also defended teammate Luca Toni, under fire after failing to score a single goal so far in this tournament.
“In terms of performance he has been decisive for us in the last two games. A goal would be the icing on the cake, but in the meantime he holds up the ball, earns penalties and forces opponents into red card offences.”
Toni has grown a moustache as a superstitious gesture and Buffon had a stark warning.
“It was his idea, but if it brings good luck then Luca won’t be able to shave it off ever again!” --

It's almost impossible to compare, IMO. There are different factors like some rules and even the ball, which is a very important factor. Maybe we can compare him with "moderns" GK as Cech, Casillas, Van Der Sar, etc, but with likely like Yashin or Zoff is almost impossible and far away of being objective.
