Buffon: We Are Missing Something

Gianluigi Buffon believes that yesterday’s goalless draw against Sampdoria proves that Juventus “are missing something”.

The Bianconeri dominated possession at the Stadio Olimpico yesterday but were desperately lacking in creative options, particularly in the second half when Alessandro Del Piero was substituted.

With Juve now 12 points behind league-leaders Inter, their chances of winning the Scudetto are undoubtedly over.

The club are expected to complete the signings of Momo Sissoko and Olof Mellberg this month in a bid to strengthen the squad, but Buffon doesn’t want to comment on possible signings.

"I don't want to talk about new signings, because I don't believe we're as far away from the top as many say,” the world’s best shot-stopper explained.

"Even against Samp, we showed this. Zdenek Grygera has played well and Nicola Legrottaglie is now a first-choice starter. I am pleased with where we are at this time.

"However, games like this show that we're still missing that something extra - but we must continue to look forward."

By all accounts Juventus are still having a successful season and look odds-on to qualify for the Champions League as they sit in third position in the standings.

Ranieri could learn a lot from both Del Piero and Buffon. These two are so eloquent to the media, but they don't beat around the bush.

Del Piero made it very clear that some guys are dogging it and its costing them. We all put two and two together.

Buffon said he's happy with most of his defenders, but there's something missing. We can put two and two together and know that's midfield quality to feed the strikers and defensive depth.

I would not be surprised at all if its actually these two and Nedved actually holding the team together (and accountable) behind closed doors.

I think Ranieri has an inferiority complex, that's why he tries to be a wiseguy in his press conferences...ppl confident in their abilities like Alex Buffon Lippi Capello etc always make smart statements and don't need to try to be funny or impressive

Potentially Serious Back Injury For Buffon (goal.com)

Juventus and Italy fans may have cause to worry after it was revealed that Gianluigi Buffon is suffering from a potentially serious back injury.

zoom - galleria The world’s number one goalkeeper missed Juventus’ Coppa Italia tie against Inter on Wednesday night due to a problem in his lower back.

Tests have revealed that the pain is chronic and that there is disc swelling. This could be potentially troublesome as it could lead to a hernia.

If this was to occur then Buffon would require surgery, which would put him out of the game for between one and three months.

The 29-year-old has been receiving extensive massage treatment, however it is believed that the only way to cure the problem is by resting.

This means that Buffon is almost certainly out of this Sunday’s Serie A match at the Stadio Picchi against Livorno, with Emanuele Belardi likely to fill in once again.

This news will come as a blow not only to Juventus, but also to Italy ahead of the European Championships in just over four months time.

In better news for Juventus, it has been revealed that the foot injury that Marco Marchionni picked up against Inter is not as serious as first thought.

There were fears that he may have broken his fifth metatarsal, which would have ruled him out for the rest of the season.

However this has proved not to be the case and Marchionni is likely to be missing for just over a month.
