Buffon-Trez title tiff

Juventus teammates David Trezeguet and Gianluigi Buffon cannot agree on whether they are aiming for the Scudetto this season.

“We make sure opponents respect us and have ended each game against the big clubs with our heads held high,” said the goalkeeper after draws against Milan, Fiorentina, Inter and Roma.

“This side has the right mentality and can get some great results. We should continue along this path. However, the Scudetto is not for us. Just making the other teams fear and respect us is a success for a newly-promoted outfit.”

Buffon was instrumental in keeping a clean sheet during last night’s 0-0 with Milan, as he performed crucial saves on Kaka and Pippo Inzaghi.

“This was an odd game, as without too many scoring opportunities, myself and Nelson Dida had to be ready at all times. I am never happy with my performances, I’m only content when we pick up points and play well.”

If the World Cup winning goalkeeper is playing down the Bianconeri’s title credentials, the same cannot be said of teammate Trezeguet.

“It was a tough game and we proved once again that we came to Milan looking for the victory,” said the Frenchman.

“We are working towards the Scudetto. We know it will be difficult, but the same goes for the other contenders. I believe we can do it because we are Juventus.”

Buffon rules out title challenge

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon wrote off his team's title chances despite the newly-promoted outfit claiming a 0-0 draw at European champions AC Milan.

It was the fourth time this season that Juve have faced one of their main title rivals - Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Roma being the other three - and the fourth time they have come away with a point, and three of those were away from home. It has suggested that just one season after winning the Serie B title - following their demotion for match-fixing and a mass exodus of star players - Juventus are ready to challenge for top honours once again.

However, it is a set of results that has called into question their ability to topple the top sides. But Buffon is adamant that the Scudetto is not on their minds. "It is not for us," he said. "But just to earn the respect and esteem of our opponents is a success for a newly promoted team."

Speaking to Sky Sports, he also refuted allegations that Juve concentrate first on not losing matches. "We have earnt respect and we've not played badly. We're a Juventus that takes risks to get big results, we've got the right attitude," he insisted.

Juve actually came closest to scoring against Milan on Saturday night, with French striker David Trezeguet slamming a fierce drive against the post after 12 minutes. Bosnian midfielder Hassan Salihamidzich also forced Milan goalkeeper Dida into a smart block early in the second half, before Massimo Oddo flung himself across the box to block Pavel Nedved's follow-up.

Milan also had chances to score but substitute Filippo Inzaghi missed the best of them, blasting the ball straight at Buffon from the edge of the box when one-on-one. French forward Trezeguet, the league's top goalscorer, is less sure than his team-mate that Juve cannot push for glory this season.

"We played well, we stopped them," he said of Milan. "It's very good, we have to continue like that and show that we have the ability. With four draws against big teams, including three away from home (Fiorentina, Roma and Milan) that shows that it's tough but that we're there or thereabouts."

Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri is happy with the way his team is progressing and how they coped with their main rivals. Ahead of Sunday's programme, they sat second in the table, just two points behind champions Inter.

"When you play against Inter and Milan you feel the personality of your opponents," he said. "Fiorentina are growing while Roma have the characteristics and the technical and mental qualities to challenge for the title."
