Gigi hails formidable Inter

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon is keen to stress that Inter are Scudetto favourites, but admits that the Bianconeri are starting to believe after last night’s derby win.

While Inter’s thrashing of Roma has given the Nerazzurri top spot, the Old Lady trail by just one point and are in second place outright after a last-gasp win over city rivals Torino.

Juve’s return from the wilderness of Serie B has been no anticlimax for their expectant fans, who see Claudio Ranieri’s men as genuine title contenders, but Buffon is staying grounded.

“Inter have 20 players that fall into the category of champions. We don’t have that kind of depth” he told Sky Sports Italia after last night’s dramatic win.

“It’s not that we are weak, it’s just that they are a tank at the moment – a bit like we were a few years ago.

“I have no problem with dreams and you shouldn’t rule us out, but we aren’t really thinking about catching Inter.

"We just need to battle hard to regain our place at the top of Serie A.”

Buffon Plays Down Scudetto Chances

The Juventus goalkeeper wants to remain with his feet to the ground despite last night's last minute win against Torino in the derby della Mole.

Gigi Buffon's bianconeri picked up a vital important win in a difficult game against local rivals Torino, the Old Lady subsequently occupying second place and sitting just one point behind league leaders Inter.

However, for Buffon, Inter remain the favourites for the Scudetto due to the sheer amount of talent that the Nerazzurri have within their ranks.

"They have 20 players who fall into the category of champions," he told Sky Italia. "We don't have this luxury.

"I will never say that we are weak players but, right now, they are very strong. They are unstoppable, just like the Juventus of some years ago," he continued.

When asked whether this Juve side can compete for the Scudetto, Buffon did not sound fully convinced.

"Juventus must never rule it out, but at the moment we're not thinking about catching Inter. Dreaming costs nothing and it's good because it brings a lot of enthusiasm.

"But we all know that reality is another matter and, that if we want to maintain our status in this league, then we must fight in every game," concluded the Italian international goalkeeper.

Berlusconi Rejected Chance To Sign Buffon

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had a pre-contract deal to sign for Milan this summer but Rossoneri President Silvio Berlusconi pulled the plug on the deal.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Buffon had agreed a four-year contract, worth €6m a season, but Berlusconi stopped the transfer from going through because it would have cost him €25m.

Instead the former Prime Minister of Italy wanted to spend this money on renewing the contract of Brazilian keeper Dida, and bringing in youngster Alexandre Pato and midfielder Emerson.

Milan fans will surely be dismayed by the news that Buffon could have signed for the club. So far this season Dida has made a number of high-profile mistakes, particularly during the week three draw against Siena, while 31-year-old Emerson looks a shadow of the once great player he was.

The Milan hierarchy have been criticised enormously for their transfer policy over the summer, with the failure to bring in a top-class striker and a decent back-up goalkeeper the main points of condemnation.

These latest reports that Berlusconi turned down the chance to sign the undisputed number-one goalkeeper in the world, will certainly not go down well with the supporters.
