Yo Eazy -- you checking out the new season of Southland?

Just caught up with the first two episodes of the new season. The writers are going Ballz-Out as much as evah. Looks to be a great season shaping up.

The cop show has been done so many times over. I was never much a huge fan of the genre in general, though I did like the occasional Hill Street Blues "realism play", etc., etc.

I think what I like about the series is that it doesn't paint everything in black or white, but really many layers of gray. Cops aren't always the good guys, and the drug dealers and punks aren't always the bad guys. Often there's a bit of good and bad in each, and often even in the same person. So it's those moral dilemmas and dichotomies that keep the show edgy, and the writing layers in some pretty intense police situations.

Personally, I find it one of the most compelling dramas on TV of the past few years. Not in a Breaking Bad way, though there are elements of that. The cast is quite good, but as with all shows that succeed like this it comes down to the writing (and some of the editing).

Yes, it's very good. Again, not everyone's sense of humour, but I like it.

Louis CK is performing stand up here next month, was considering going, though I never seen his sitcom (just few talkshows or standup).

His style is more the depressing, putting yourself down type of comedy. He's pretty funny, I watch him sometimes but usually it's just too meh. I prefer more dynamic comedians

He went a little down hill. Paradoxically when he truly found his "voice". His attitude is still funny, but his material isn't what it was.

The TV critics in The New Yorker and the New York Times both loved the last season and went out on a limb saying it was the series' best yet. I didn't think it was nearly as good as the previous season, but it was still good. Just not as inventive, not as unpredictable, and not quite as funny.

The episode where he goes to Miami was one of the better ones in the inventive category for his most recent season, but that wasn't anything like the previous season -- where he went to Iraq, or he got dressed down by Joan Rivers, or where he had an uncomfortable scene with Dane Cook, or as when he was a masturbation supporter on that Fox News-like TV program, or had those great comedic scenes hanging out with that woman who wasn't into him while he was massively into her...
