Gay Marriage is such a stupid debate and one that just shouldn't exist. Marriage is a religious institution - the government has as little right to tell a religion what to do as a religion has to tell a government what to do. A civil union is a legal institution - and civil unions for couples of any sex exist in 'great' britain. Why anyone would want a government to legislate on their relationship is a bit weird....

marriage is not a religious institution, exclusively but above all a social union/institution - a religious ceremony may or may not be part of a couple tying the knot, depends on their personal views/desires. For non-religious people, there is hardly any "incentive" for "god to be their witness" or anything of the sort. In that sense, a civil union/marriage is a marriage in its own right, minus the self-righteous, religious crap.

All in all, with the self-perceived high-morality of religion off the table, denying gay people the right to marry is in the end denying them a basic civil right.
Of course, religions preach that all people are equal to god but guess that should be written off as merely one of them many contradictions and inconsistencies

There are a lot of studies that show gay parents to be better parents than straight parents. Gay unions so far have been more (in proportion) stable than heterosexual unions.

You cant marry your cat. Marriage is an institution between two consentig individuals. A cat cant give legal consent nor express free will to enter into marriage.

A quick test. Circle the right answer. A cat can not:

a) chase its tail
b) look at you judgmentally
c) understand the consequences of entering into a legally binding union of two individuals and clearly express legally valid consent to do so


Second, marriage is a private issue, taxes are not. They are determined by the majority of society. If you want to slash your taxes you can: vote for the party/candidate that has made such a promise, and if the majority of citizens agree with you (because taxes affect the entire society and the state), voila, your taxes are slashed.


And that really didnt need Stephen Hawking to figure out... really, just put in a bit of effort instead of just throwing out there the first thing that crosses your mind.

I do think the idea of a "Gay Olympics" is absolutely stupid. I mean, first of all, gays can participate in the Olympics. (Unless the gay Olympics have introduced events like autofellatio.) my cat consents, if i can leave inheritance to my cat surely i can marry it, furthermore marriage is very much not a private issue, you have to go to court and appear before a judge to finalize it. And if it's a posteriori, you still have to go to court to prove the grounds of amrriage. So no private it's not if it was private we wouldnt have this conversation since no one needs to know, as we can see you by far are teh one who should keep his mouth shut in the issue.
Now going back to taxes, single people pay more taxes and adding 'spouses' to insurance plans will make my insurance bill higher. I dont care for teh moral side of it as i have no opinion unlike the bevy of internet geniuses we got here, you included of course.
But, i dont want to finance the tax savings and insurance benefits, of more people. I am single and i am paying taxes as a single guy. If some dude can marry another dude and get tax benefits then i too should eb allowed to marry my cat.

"Marriage" as an institution has been becoming rather secularised for a long time, how many married couples actively practice? I am sure many atheists slip under their radar and get married in churches all of the time, I would (but this is purely for architectural reasons).

Sam, you mentioned as well on Facebook that you don't think couples should get benefits/rights when they marry, but which ones exactly? They should definitely get housing benefits/tax breaks, not for being in love but simply for cohabiting. Especially in this time when more and more people are choosing to live alone, cohabitation means saving resources, and is ultimately helpful to society. Marriage, in my view, is simply the easiest way to police such a scheme. Four people sharing a house should have the same rights, but as they're not legally bound to one another it is much more difficult to prevent benefit fraud.

I have immature views? Oh boy, this is going to be a long day. First of all, marriage is an individual thing, it concerns two indiividuals. Of course you need the court or the relevant body to enter into marriage (how could you otherwise prove you actually entered the marriage). However, a marriage has no direct effect nor concern on other individuals. The fact that I am or am not married has absolutely no effect on you. Therefore, it is an individual concern.


And no, your cant does not consent. Can your cat understand the coonsequences of entering into marriage and then express that conent in a legally binding way? If yes, you better go to a TV station or something, you can make a shitload of money on that. And no, you can not leave your inheitance to your cat, you can lleave it to a trust/foundation that you instruct to take care of your cat. Cats are not people, they have no legal capacity.


Sedcondly, again relating to taxes. Taxes are very muc a public thing. They ay the police, the roads, the government... everything. The taxes are set by the legislator, who is (in democratic countric at least) democratically elected. Which means if you want lower taxes you have to request it from the legislator and then vote into office those that will make it happen. Because it does not concern only you, you can not make a choic by yourself on what kind of tax you want.
