But, and not to speak for Andy, it's a fair argument among gays to suggest that some of the institutionalized ridicule and discrimination they suffer is equally a great deal of personal pain and suffering. Pain and suffering that might only be demonstrated by someone else making such shocking statements about their own beloved institutions.
I honestly don't think enough has been said in this thread for the social persecution gays feel as a result of culturally accepted viewpoints, many of which have been expressed here. As much as I hate the speech, I do think it demonstrates a shocking point. How shocking that might be to someone on the other side of this issue might only become apparent when it is instead turned on their own cherished institutions and belief systems. So it's relevant because it makes that point clear.
It's a bit of eye-for-an-eye, and I don't like it for making the whole world blind of course, but then again that's in the Old Testament.
