He was solid enough defensively and his ball retention was fine in the middle of the pitch.

Some of his passing and decision making higher up the pitch were quite poor, though.

I thought he did well although because of Switzerland's limited offense and questionable decision making he shot from stupid angles a lot, switched between DM and a progressive CM.

He was never really close enough to be expected to do anything, because Young wasn't his man.

He could have thrown himself and hoped for the best, but I wouldn't really criticise him for not doing that as Young took the shot pretty early.

Classic case of looking at the person closest to the goalscorer, rather at the several mistakes by others leading to the situation.
I remember how once the entire forum blamed Poulsen for a goal Fiorentina scored against us, simply because he was the closest to the goalscorer. When I made some 5-6 photos of the entire action it turned out that Poulsen was the only one of the 7 Juve players at the back who did his defensive job well on that goal.
Then they found another victim and started blaming Melo :D
