You're right of course, but it's nice to be able to decide how often you change things. On this laptop I'm on ubuntu 17.10, which is behind but not that far behind. A guy at work is still running a desktop that looks like ubuntu 12.04.
Sounds to me that this is due to the fact that we are using Lazy Loading images. The function is enabled through an add-on so it can be disabled if too many people have issues. Never seen the problem myself.
Lazy Loading means that the images aren't loaded until they're in your viewport, resulting in much faster initial loading time for threads with lots of images.
