I think one of the worst ways to lose a loved one is suddenly and without the chance to say goodbye and be with them in their last moments. For someone who lost his father like that, I can only say that you cherish these moments, however long they may last.

I can totally see that, Sheik. My wife certainly knows it.

And yet it doesn't make the experience feel any less surreal. Probably because most societies aren't as closely in touch with death and the inevitable -- we often push it off to the side and would prefer to pretend that it's not there, inconvenient as it may be.

It does give you an appreciation, however, for why humans have held rituals about it for far longer than we have any written history of humans.

Greg, sad to here this mate, my thoughts are with you and your wife.
Like you said, the only good thing about this way of having to go, is the time you get to say goodbye.

All considering, I think that it is going ok with my dad.
He had his first 3 days of chemo a few weeks ago, is on holiday now and when we speak, he says that it doesn't feel like his health is declining so we can assume the chemo did its job up until now because last time, it all went very fast downhill with him.
Next week, he'll get dose number 2, let's hope this continues for a few years.

Even more important than getting a longer life, it sounds like he's able to get some quality of life out of his regimen as well. And that's the key.

It will always feel that way. I only wanted to say what can be done during these times. Make the most of the time you got. It's precisely because of our pushing away of death does its inevitability make the remaining time so precious. I am kind of doing the same with my mom these days. Cherishing every moment so as to reduce the regret I'll have when she's gone.

The unfortunate news is that my wife's mother passed away this morning, but she was surrounded by family and friends. And it gave her a peaceful end to her long suffering with cancer.
