Spalletti: 'Why I quit Roma'
Wednesday 2 September, 2009
Luciano Spalletti has explained the reasons behind his resignation and wishes Claudio Ranieri the best on the Roma bench.
“I think my resignation was the right thing to do. It was my own initiative, that way I took my share of the responsibility,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
The Giallorossi have had their worst start since the 1950s with two consecutive Serie A defeats, but he quit rather than waited to be fired so that he gave up two seasons’ worth of wages, as his contract expires in 2011.
“The last two results were certainly decisive, but in any case at the start of the season I had already met with President [Rosella] Sensi to clarify some matters and I’d realised I would have to take more responsibility on many fronts.”
This was Spalletti’s fifth season at the Olimpico and he appeared moved as he took away his belongings from the Trigoria training ground.
“I leave behind many memories and if I have to pinpoint specific games, then the ones against Chelsea and Real Madrid stick in my mind.
“Another thing I’ll hold in my heart is the club anthem sung by the entire stadium, the people who feel so close to this side. I will always sing it too. I’ll continue to follow Roma’s progress under a great Coach like Ranieri.”
Ranieri puts pen to paper on a two-year contract today and Spalletti generously wishes him all the best.
“Ranieri can be safe in the knowledge he has a good squad. Aside from the fact I assume he has seen what happened in these two games, being a Romanista from this city, he will be up to date and know the Giallorossi have not played badly.
“In my view we did very well against Genoa, while we must recognise Juventus were superior over the 90 minutes, but there were two or three incidents that could have put Roma ahead.”
However, Spalletti did hint there were personality clashes with captain Francesco Totti towards the end of his reign.
“You have to look at the numbers and how well this team and Totti individually have done in the four years.
“Then if there isn’t great unity, both individually and at a collective level with the staff, me and the directors on a professional and human level, then it’s very difficult to achieve these results.
“These are results that will remain in the history of Roma. As for all the rest, that’s just talk.”
The Coach has been linked with the job at Zenit St Petersburg from January and left the door open for that possibility.
“I will dedicate more time to my family and then certainly start travelling the world. There are many great tacticians out there and I want to be informed on the new working methods and technology.”
