I am with Alen on this one, Maldini is one overrated prick.
I guess you didn't listen to the stories that he was the best ever and you actually watched him play ever since the late 80's.

All due respect to many here, but I have a feeling that people hardly ever watched Maldini until the late 1990's/ early 2000's and they go on by the stories they heard about his greatness.

I apologize if my feeling is wrong.

5 great defenders. All at more or less the same level. One won nothing in his career, the rest won 2-3 trophies and one won 5 CL trophies.
If you start a poll, who do you think will win?
Nah you really think Maldini is an overrated player who is all that because of Milan's successes? It's the best example of bias. Even better than the infamous Defoe>Rooney shit :D

You're becoming annoying with your claims that people underrate everything Italian.
Maldini is in the FIFA team of the century because he was great and he won a lot and he deserved it.
That doesn't mean that he is the best ever by default. I rate Zanetti higher. Only less successful in his club career than Maldini.

Actually, I do think Maldini is overrated. I've seen the man in all the CL finals he played, all the world cups and Euro's, many serie A matches. It's Milan's success that made him "the best defender ever".
Doesn't mean he wasn't great, though.
Well not you specifically, but it's undeniably prevalent here. That's your opinion of course, Zanetti has been a magnificent player but I don't put him on the same level as Maldini. Maldini's success made him, yes, but it is also part of the reason why people see Zanetti in such a good light right now. If he was reliable old Zanetti playing in the bridesmaid Inter sides of the past it wouldn't be the same.

Were it not for his father we probably wouldn't have ever heard of him, unlike for example Del Piere where his raw talent brought him to Juve or Nesta. Maldini had all the luxury to be developed since young age at a club like Milan.

You seem like you needed a brief reminder of the rare class player he was, so I provided it. You said in your last post he was considered what he was considered because of Milans success, like all he needed to do was just be there and little else. You say Milans success made him, that to be is the perfect example of total biasm against him (ofcourse its a vital factor, but you make it sound like he would be ordinary without it).
"The greatest defender ever"....that was the problem.

I never doubted his greatness, but as I told Hoori, Milan's success made him better than the other great defenders who won nothing, or almost nothing. Like Zanetti.

"Messi is the best player ever"
    Am I overrating Messi?
If I say that I'm overrating Messi, does that mean that Messi isn't great?

People somehow equal "overrated" with "bad".

    I was saying this:

    Maldini was a great player.
    Zanetti was/is a great player.

People say Maldini is the best defender ever. I disagree because I believe that 2-3 defenders I've seen in my life were better than him.

So then I asked the question....If Maldini was the same player as he was in Milan, but if he played for Inter from the mid 1980's till 2009, was he going to be considered the best defender ever?

It's not Maldini's fault that he played for Milan, but playing for Milan that won 5 CLs and lost 2 more CL finals, was the decisive factor why people think HE and not someone else is the best defender ever.
If you ask my father though, he'll say Beckenbauer was the best ever :D
