No one is settling. This guy wasn't on the lips of people because quite frankly, no one even knew that he was an option until last week. Honestly, for the money that he is valued at (which, by the way, he is still being undervalued at due to his contract expiring next year), this is a make sense purchase. He is exactly what they need.
And it's kind of odd that one of your favorite players on this team, one that you defend more than anyone else, was a compromise as well. As big of a compromise, if not bigger, than Llorente. Yet you are convinced that Llorente is a compromise.
Sorry, pal, but I see Llorente as an opportunity
You sure about that? Just like RvP, wasn't Llorente into the last year of his contract even before last week when his situation with Bilbao imploded. I don't think the club or any of us had cared to venture this route up until then, but instead had the time to even make enquiries about someone like Lewandowski. If this isn't us settling, then it would've been nice to have been linked to him before his refusal to sign a contract extension made it easier for the buying club whoever that turned out to be.
I've said it time and again, both Quag and Matri came in as a compromise in their respective situations. DiNatale rejected us, Borriello rejected us, and we signed Quag on deadline day. E same thing happened with Matri too in the winter mercato, he came at the death after we couldn't sign a couple of targets. The year after, we went from Aguero to Tevez to Pastore to Higuain to Vucinic. This year, its more of the same. RVP to Suarez to JoJo to Higuain to Dzeko to Llorente.
For the record, I got nothing against Llorente per se, the frustration or questioning this signing perhaps arises from what it represents for us as a football club brand. We cannot get our targets repeatedly. Something has got to be wrong somewhere. We can all stand up and blame the state of aerie a. And say it lacks appeal. But what does the ligue 1 have over a league that has Juventus, Inter, Milan, Napoli and even to a lesser extent Udinese, that they are able to sign Zlatan, Lucas, Thiago Silva, Pastore, etc. The point is, we seem to be settling a bit. And its not a one off. We had the money this season, we had it last season, and yet we couldn't close the deals we were after. For me, it's a question of priorities. At the very least, we should've been able to sign somebody of JoJo's level in a year like this. Please don't tell me about a 30m price tag because the amount of deadwood we've collected, we could build Napoli a new stadium. We are entering a phase where we need to step up from opportunities to making the cut with the big boys. If that means breaking the bank to make a marquee signing, then so be it. In the long run, it's the only way you keep a positive global opinion and have the young starlets want to come play for your club. Its a bit of a vicious cycle so to speak.
