Not exactly. Melo isn't just a destroyer, and his regular position is CM although he did play DM for Viola. The guy can actually pass the ball rather well and does add drive to the middle of the park, adding a bit of Brazilian flavor on the way by means of having a good eye for moving the ball around.

Considering Melo is younger and has proven himself in two top leagues, I think it's apparent that he is the better investment and a more suited player for the long haul in Serie A.

Spending 25M Euros on an unproven D'Agostino might have backfired.

Can't seem to find the original interview, but this is from Jan 07 (which refers to Blanc's comments from Summer '06)...first reference to this "5 year" plan, as far as I remember. So, we are going into the 4th year as far as I'm concerned.

How many good cross did Molinaro provide last year Alen?

Eventhough I don't think we need Alen for the answer:p
He had 0 assists, which says everything. :D
The most useful cross he made last season was against Chievo (3:3) when he finally made a good cross that found Camoranesi. Camo shot and it was deflected of a Chievo defender, before it went inside the net. It was an owngoal so it didn't count as an assist.

As for his crossing. He made 90 crosses and only 22 reached a Juve player. Now, when i say "reached a Juve player", it doesn't mean that he found Amauri's or Iaquinta's head inside the box. It only means that the first player who got to that cross was a Juve player. It might have been Marchionni who got first to the ball near the corner flag on the opposite side of Molinaro. :D

But the other full backs weren't great crossers either.

Molinaro had 22 out of 90
Grygera had 18 out of 95
De Ceglie had 14 out of 52
Salihamidzic had 5 out of 23
Mellberg had 3 out of 12
Zebina had 3 out of 7

The difference is that some of those crosses Grygera and De Ceglie made were actually useful and resulted with an assist.

Yeah, De Ceglie I think made 4 assists if I remember it correctly.
I remember two of them. One was against Milan when his cross found Amauri alone in the box to make it 3:1 and the other one was again a cross for Amauri, this time from the right side, in the last minute against Lecce in Lecce, when we won 2:1.

P.S: Yeah, i checked. 2 assists for him last season. Exactly the two i mentioned.

Oh, and another thing. De Ceglie made both assists when he played in midfield. Against Milan he replaced Nedved and played as a ML, while against Lecce he, for some reason, replaced Marchionni and played as a MR.

Juve-Milan
Juventus: Manninger; Grygera, Mellberg, Chiellini, Molinaro; Marchionni, Sissoko (Zanetti 87), Marchisio, Nedved (De Ceglie 30); Del Piero, Amauri (Iaquinta 88)

Lecce-Juve
Juventus: Manninger; Grygera, Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Molinaro; Marchionni (De Ceglie 82), Sissoko, Marchisio, Nedved; Giovinco, Amauri

Wow. When you keep in mind, that Molinaro played almost 40 games (or about 2500 minutes in total), than this is a pretty low effort.

Where do you get those stats from, Alen?

Well, he's not the type of a player that will have some great statistics, which doesn't mean he wasn't great.
But you see, players like Sissoko and Gattuso can have great season but the stats don't show that. The same is with Melo.

He had 1224 successful passes (out of 1489 passes). That's much better than any Juve player (the best passer last year in Juve was Nedved with 893 succ. passes out of 1079) but compared to D'Agostino it doesn't look great, although Melo has a better ratio. (D'Ago had 1671 successful passes out of 2141).

Melo won 76 tackles (the best in Juve was Molinaro with 85, while D'Ago was the best in the league with 109).

He was great in intercepting passes (which shows good movement and good positioning). He intercepted 113 passes. The best in Juve in this category was Molinaro with 96 intercepted passes, while D'Agostino had 93 intercepted passes.

He made quite a lot of fouls. 90 fouls committed (top 5 in serie A). He was also in top 5 regarding yellow and red cards. :D
mille grazie !

i really am looking forward to a healthy zebina, because he is probably our best crosser (which he showed in the friendly lately)
