One of the things I hate about Juve
and about Lippi as a tacitican is that he doesn't want to win all the games

He is too economical
knowing that only a miracle will get Basel through
Juve fields a semi strong squad
making also sure to avoid suspension for the quarter final
Now Sure this is good for the quarter final

But It is bad for the pride of the fans
and also probably for the teams confidence
I mean how fun can it be to go play a game knowing the objective is not to win but to avoid getting booked..........

Yes we were crap, but who cares! I mean we have a more important match infront of us and besides I kind of sympathized with Basel today, not in the way that I wished for them to beat us with a 4 goal difference, but to win with the smallest advantage as possible, because the crowd in the stadium was great and they might not get a chance soon to do what they did this season  :)

We were a mess, which is not really that surprizing as it doesn't come often that we play with a line-up like this. It also seemed that we have no spirit at all and we were just going for a not 4-0 result and pretty much save as much energy as possible by doing it (it was because of that that Nedved wa snot around much IMO or was it something else?). We could need somoene like Davids who would not only maybe clear a ball in midfield but also slightly push it forward. With Tachi and Tudor that's not gonna happen. Although that strike from Alessio was ... :mute:

Why I don't want Iuliano in defence was a perfect example today! :fero: He's sooo sloppy. He was guilty for the 1st Basel goal and almost scored an autogoal in the 2nd half! The defence kind of held Basel back, but a better and more experienced team would bang tons of goals into our net

Salas actually looked a bit better. Nothing earth-moving, but better than the last time I saw him. He and DP worked-up a nice action in the last minutes of the game, but DP was not accurate enough. After DP got in Salas moved back and it looked like Nedved and DP are our "puntas" :undecide:

Zenoni showed nothing new and others were just too quiet to comment. No, wait, Gigi deserves to be mentioned! Made some very good saves today! :D

Ole Ole Ole we are through! :cheesy: :D :extatic:

Anyways
it is embarssing being the fan of a big team like Juve
and explaining to your friends why the lose and completley lack spirit

I mean this type of performance insn't exactly setting a good example for the young aspiring Fans of Juve that dream about becoming the future stars.....

A performance like this probably causes the Team to lose some of the future fans it could have recruited

Who if they just happend to turn on the TV knowing it was football saw a spiritless team play a not so important match against Basel

Imagine if they would of seen the Juve of last week
I mean after that Game I am sure Juve has won many admirerers in Spain

But after this game I am sure
We have lost more fans than we have gained.....

Nina, I don't think that was about "true" fans, more like prospective fans.

And I have to say I agree, Evelyn. :) But those prospective fans might also see some other Juve game, possibly a better performance in a more important encounter to change their minds ;)

Marcello Lippi has congratulated his men for sealing Juve's first quarter-final appearance since 1999 and looks for a date with Barca.

“There are a few regrets for the defeat as Alessandro Del Piero had the chance to win it moments earlier,” said the Coach, “but it is Mission Accomplished with a wonderful Alessio Tacchinardi goal.”

Lippi fielded a 4-5-1 formation that was geared towards a more defensive outlook than we have seen from Juventus recently.

“We didn’t want to give Basle too much space for a counter-attack and they were very fired up for this game. There was no need to take risks.”

“It is a great satisfaction to be among the top eight in Europe and we last saw this stage in 1999. To be back here, especially with all the problems we had this season, is a wonderful feeling.”

Del Piero made his comeback in Switzerland after six weeks on the sidelines with a thigh injury.

“I would have played Del Piero a bit earlier had I not been forced into two substitutions for injuries,” revealed Lippi.

“Lilian Thuram also told us of a slight muscular problem so I wanted to wait and make sure. He played 25 minutes and did well.”

The draw for the quarters will be made on Friday and Juve will meet Milan, Barcelona or the winner of the very tight Group B.

“I have been a Coach for 20 years and have never played against Barcelona. It is something I would love to experience.”

Tonight’s defeat saw the Bianconeri take their Phase Two tally to eleven goals scored and seven conceded.

“The goal difference is what saw us through this group in the end,” noted the Coach, “but it is true that Juventus are not accustomed to conceding so many. I am not worried.”

David Trezeguet was forced to limp off after just 30 minutes due to a knee problem, but Lippi assured it was nothing to worry about.

“It is a bruise on the back of his knee and the muscle contracted with the pain, but it is nothing serious.”

The Frenchman should be ready to face Milan in Saturday’s showdown at the San Siro, a result that could make the title a two-horse race.

“To win at San Siro and knock them out of the Scudetto chase would be ideal. It is never and shall never be a relaxed game and both sides will certainly try to get all three points.”

I agree with what Nina said. This game was of very little importance to us, and after the way we have played in our last couple of games a rest was well deserved.

And as for losing fans because of this performance, I have to disagree. Look at how Man Utd played today? They were run over by the same Depor team that we beat last week, and I'm sure the true United fans knew why it happened, as should the true Juventus friends.

I can't say I concur

The problem is a great team should be an example for the rest of the world

If he would have put on a show like against Depor or even like the one against Basel at the Delle Alpi.

The players of Basel would of left the pitch knowing they had been outdone by their superiors.
That they had been beaten by a great team.
And I am sure many of them would see that defeat as more memorable then this
"Another Day on the Job" approach.......

I mean I don't know if you can remember the old days of the CL when Juve use to rampage through the group stages.....

Some Journalists would even argue that Juve had the Strongest starting 11 to ever set foot on a football pitch.

Teams would lose against us... dropping points was as uncommon as getting Red Cards....

Recently I read some journalist writting "Juventus is the only italian team that has no passion". They subsitute pragmatism and rationale for passion. She said I instantly wrote a pretty angry email to her telling her how wrong she was....
It is days like this I begin to see her point.......

I mean I think we are all passionate fans here right....
How many when the group stage was drawn actually thought
(Good!! Lets finish Second number one will cost us too much effort)
or
(Lets take 10points out of the first 4rounds and then field our reserves in the remaining 2 games)

I thought Great lets Try To win this Group (Revenge Depor and crush manu and toy around with Basel)

I mean I thought the whole point of football was going out on the pitch and giving it your all....

I mean they should remember the day they played the BiancoNerri for the rest of their lives....

Will they Remember us for such a lack lustre performacne?

Congratulations. You deserved to go through, even today I always had the impression there was way more potential in your team than it showed (which isn't suprising, comparing the financial situation of the two teams) and it had the situation under control in every single moment (well... at least the situation in the group table).

I'm very happy with our CL season anyway, and in a few years' (or even months') time nobody'll ask how we could beat Italy's leader, so I'm gonna enjoy this moment anyway.:cool:

Cheers

Buffon as good as usual

Birindelli actually did play well and i was impressed

Iuliano just hope we do not have to rely on him as he is hopeless, he only looks good in a 3 man defence where Montero and Ferrara help him out for Juve and Netsa and Canna helped him out in euro2000

Montero to be honest did not really notice him that much

Thuram was his normal good self slight worry is that i saw him holding his hamstrings

Tudor really should never be allowed to play in m/f but we all keep saying that

Tacchinardi best player for juve and took his goal very well

Zambrotta nothing special, alwyas taking more touches than necessary as normal

Nedved again tireless display but no inspiration

Trez was his usual self , hope injury is not serious

Salas played his best and he does deserve to be played more than he has been doing

Zenoni has no redeeming qualities for me and i rate him worse than Baiocco

Dp nice to see him back and did not expect much from him and well did not get much

Pessotto was on the field

Well, yes,to some degree I agree with you. But I think if we try our best for this match, we may lose another important match ahead of us because Milan didn't exert great strength at all in recent matches, maybe we will lose more prospective fans in that match then. Look at Milan and Man U, actually it is hard to find a team which will still play at full split when they've already been thru. And it seems to be the last match in CL we can rest. I think in later matches juve will not play like this any more.

Look forward to Milan VS Juve!!! If we can win milan then we will not need to worry about serie A too much any more!!! ^_^

Nice to see Basel win one more. Very nice for them in this years CL.

Before the CL started, I think I said I'd be happy with being in the QFs, so mission accomplished for me. I don't see them winning. Best chance they have of advancing to the the Semi's is if they draw Milan in the QFs.
