Moratti elected to Lega Calcio
Tuesday 24 October, 2006
The elections for the new Lega Calcio council have given roles to Inter’s Massimo Moratti and Atalanta President Ivan Ruggeri.

The ‘union’ of Serie A clubs needed two new faces after Sampdoria’s Riccardo Garrone resigned in protest at the actions of new Lega President Antonio Matarrese, while Rosella Sensi of Roma was promoted to vice-President.

However, it was not an easy task, as it took 11 different voting rounds for Moratti to earn his place.

The Nerazzurri patron failed to capture the necessary 15 votes, but in the end the deadline was lowered to 13 and he was able to get in.

The other new arrival, Atalanta President Ruggeri, managed to pick up his required quota at the sixth attempt.

Other initial candidates who later pulled out of the running were Catania director Pietro Lomonaco, Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini, Torino owner Urbano Cairo and Udinese board member Campoccia.

“I took a step back to allow the votes to reach Moratti,” explained Cairo. “It was the right solution, because he has been in football for a long time and took over the place that had belonged to Giacinto Facchetti.”

Moratti recently took the Inter Presidency back after the tragic death of Facchetti from cancer.

The Serie B Lega Calcio elections were much less fractious, as Juventus chief Giovanni Cobolli Gigli and Bologna’s Alfredo Cazzola were voted in.

Just as we were expected to get a reduction on our penalty points, Moratti has stepped in Lega Calcio.

I wonder what will happen now?:shifty:

so they are going to take off 7 points. BIg whoop. Wasn't there a rumour that we would end up with -5 or 0???
I would be satisfied with -10 points.

That decision would push us to the middle of the table.

Fewer and fewer spectators are attending Serie A matches, according to a study conducted by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The average crowd attendance for a Serie A match has decreased to 19,511 this season, a very worrying figure if compared to the data from 1998, when the average gates were 31,161.

The results of the study may have been affected by the Calciopoli summer scandal and its consequences.

It is no coincidence that the drop has come after Juventus, the team with the largest fan base in Italy, were demoted to the Second Division.

The last time figures were so low was in the 1970s and Italy does not seem to be following the English and Spanish trend, where the number of spectators is increasing.

League officials were hoping that the Nazionale’s triumph in Germany’s World Cup would have boosted the fans’ enthusiasm.

But increased levels of violence at matches, the poor quality of the stadiums and the excellent television coverage in Italy have all contributed to fans staying away.

Furthermore, this season’s Serie B hosts a number of strong sides – unsurprisingly the Second Division attendance figures have jumped 20.3%

Juventus lawyer Cesare Zaccone believes that club were fortunate to escape being demoted to Serie C for their part in Calciopoli.

The Old Lady’s board held an intense meeting in Turin this afternoon regarding the relegation of the team and their financial problems.

President Cobolli Gigli was present, as well as chief executive Jean-Claude Blanc, Zaccone and all the minor shareholders of the team.

The Bianconeri’s board was attacked by the shareholders for the club’s position in court during Calciopoli.

The shareholders believe that it was the wrong decision when they asked for Serie B, and admitted being guilty – but Zaccone clearly had a different take on things.

“Probably someone in this meeting doesn’t understand the situation we were in,” said the lawyer.

“The dossier that was given to us included so many infractions made by Luciano Moggi (pictured) and Antonio Giraudo, who were representing the club at the time.

“There wasn’t much to do considering their illegal actions, and Juventus was inevitably responding for them.

“Our situation was tragic, what could we do? We couldn’t defend Moggi or Giraudo.

“There were so many accusations against us and the obvious punishment was Serie C. So we asked for the Serie B without penalisation.”

Zaccone still thinks that Juventus made the best decision they could in the situation.

“We deserved Serie C, so being put in Serie B was a good result – we did it to make Juve survive,” he concluded.

Cobolli Gigli had little to say after the meeting, apart from offering a statement of defiance.

"I understand the shareholders, but we are trying our best to bring Juve back to the level we should be at," said the chief.

Who the fuck hired this idiot? The board was to busy trying to smoothen Juve's image instead of fighting the case. Imagine if this stance was taken during the doping scandal? Juve would have never got it overturned.

FFS it doesn't even take a genius lawyer. Look at Milan, their lawyer was able to distance Meani from the club, even though every1 knows thats bullshit, as its quickly contradicted by the fact Galliani received a ban, which clearly implicates Milan were aware what was happening.

Gianni's absence has never been so clear as it is now. Good thing these idiots weren't in charge during the doping scandal.
