What's wrong with supporting another national team when it's not playing against yours Andy? My national team doesn't stand a chance in big tournaments. Moreover, many of Italian players are my favorite football players so when I watch them playing, I normally cheer for them. What's wrong with this?
Because it makes no sense, IMO. I have no ties to Germany except for ancestry, so I don't see any reason to support or like the Germans. When I see people like Pitbull support the "Azurri" through his profile yet doesn't have anything about Latvia in there, it's pretty obvious what's going on.

Club football is different from internationals. For instance, I could play for Juventus without being an Italian, but I couldn't play for the Azzurri. There's a huge difference here.

We have been over this time and time again, with people never changing their opinions on this issue, so it's a waste of time.

By that reasoning you can't like Juventus, because you're a fatty and fatties can't play for Juventus.

People can become Italian anyway. It is theoretically possible.

Yeah, I'm probably fat for a snot-shirt prick waffle-eater like yourself, but not that bad.

Belgium doesn't exist.

You know I totally agree with you when these people support other national teams, you know with buying Italian flags, pretending to be Italian, trying speaking the language, or feeling themselves as Italians (all because of football)etc.. That's so retarded.

But there is nothing wrong to like/support a national team because of their football, people love Brazilian football for example, Holland's and even Italy's. Not everyone is patriotic, I don't like it when politics or patriotism is involved with sports, it's always sport, a game an entertainment, a business industry, not a nationalism, nor a tradition. I will always look at it that way.

But how dare you support Azzurri when you have Khodadad Azizi :broken:
Aaah, Khodadad :touched:

Well, I honestly don't buy this philosophy of "it's Iranian, so I've got to love it" thing. That aside, this is sports Andy. I love the US basketball team because I love those terrific players. I love Azzurri because my favorite players are playing there. I enjoy watching Phelps and Bolt even though they don't bring me (and my country) any medals/pride. But I like them because they're great, they're enjoyable to watch. I like them and I cheer for them. There's nothing wrong with this to be honest.

Oh and I thought you were one of those who supported Amauri to play for the Azzurri. Weren't you the one who was making fun of the "Italian blood" bs? And, Amauri is not Italian.

Snoop summed it all up, it's ok to support another NT, just don't be a fuckin wanna-be.
I don't understand why anyone would want to be Italian. Look, I have a lot of Italian friends, but almost all of them are exactly what you'd expect an Italian to be. At times they can be walking stereotypes.

Isn't it obvious? Because chicks find them attractive :D

Me for instance, I got laid exacly 2-3 times because a chick thought I was Italian or Spanish. It doesn't get you laid per se, but it's easier to open up.
"Are you Italian or something?" Million times I've been asked this, with a bigass smile on the face :D

But I think it's also a nationalism and a tradition. In fact, these are what make it even more exciting. Look at the way Turks play football. God, you gotta love them. They put their heads against the ball, they put their lives on their matches whenever it comes to their national team. They were one of my favorite teams [:p] in the Euros only because of their brave and proud way of playing. What makes the World Cup the most important event in the sports is exactly these traditions and stuff.

But why should you deprive yourself of taking part in this pompous festival when you're Maldivian for example? :D It's easy. Pick a side you like the most and feel yourself a part of them for a short time :D

funny enough that Andy, who brought this discussion, missed the crucial point - i like Azzurri because of the players and not the players because of the Azzurri, so basically this discussion shouldn't have took place here, since i don't need to be an "italian fanboy" if i want to say a good word about Cannavaro.

What I meant is I don't see it that way (as nationalism or a tradition), and millions out there see it that way too, sure other millions do..

There were times I supported Turkey too, yeah might sound shocking :D I am a huge Terim fan, but sometimes I disliked them because of this patriotic idiocy "btw they lost because of their ultra-nationalism, a lot, and specially their exit of the 2006 WC qualification, and the incidents happened next, and that's the ugly part of sports for you, you decide which one is right and wrong".

I can sympathy and support any national team or a player, you are Iranian and you support US basket team, this is the beauty of sport, and not the other way.
