ROME (AP) - Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro believes striker Antonio Cassano can again play for the world champions after having improved his discipline.

The Italians have returned home following a disastrous Confederations Cup campaign in South Africa, in which a win over the United States was followed by losses to Egypt and Brazil.

As a result, coach Marcello Lippi is coming under pressure to bring in new players, and Cassano has impressed since moving to Sampdoria from Real Madrid.

Lippi had previously looked unfavorably on Cassano's quick temper and ill-discipline.

"He's paying for his past mistakes, as I often tell him," Cannavaro told ANSA news agency. "Above all, he missed a big chance at Real Madrid. Now, he has found the right team and city and we are not talking about his tantrums anymore.

"If he continues this way, he can come back and be part of the national team. He has the quality to be among us."

Cannavaro, who has returned to Juventus following three seasons at Madrid, feels Italian football needs to act quickly to restore its once proud reputation.

"It is not only the national team, we need to reconstruct Italian football," he said. "It is hard to see any young stars coming through."

Say what you will, but its good he is initiating the Cassano to Azzurri bandwagon, Lippi is really stubborn, and Cassano is badly needed in the NT.

Hard to disagree with anything Cannavaro has said.

I would like to see the reaction if Del Piero said something similar.
