The truth is they don't. Most Americans haven't set foot outside of the U.S. before. I think I saw some statistic once that showed that only 1/3 of Americans have ever been issued a passport. Not surprisingly, there's a lot of xenophobia in this country. Perhaps not quite as intense as, say, Japan. But it's there in spades. If you don't know a Muslim, they're all terrorists. If you don't know someone gay, they're all evil hedonists out to undermine the morality of America.
What doesn't help is that for all the advances in information access with the advent of cable TV and the Internet, it is still very one-dimensional at best. Case and point: it's U.S. government policy for the media not to be able to show the caskets coming back from Iraq, despite the fact that this very issue needs to be in our face for the side-effects of our elective decisions and responsibility.
I do have to go out of my way to get things like the BBC news, watch RAI news and try to translate, etc.

Nothing fazes me any more.
London will get back on it's feet super quick. The brain washed sub human savages that undertook this attrocity will slip back into a lifestyle provided to them by the society they just attacked. All that will remain will be the grieving for the dead and the pain of the wounded and scarred. Nothing gained.
Life will go on...time heals everything.
However, to those who blame the UK for bringing this upon themselves, tell me one instance in the Gulf when Brits, yanks, anyone, intentionally targeted unknown innocents?
Anyone doing that in my name I would expect punished to the full letter of the law. Every week or so there are military trials here where soldiers are accused of war crimes...some times they are found not guilty, some times they are convicted, but the most important thing is that the trial itself shows that anything outwith the rules of war are deemed unacceptable.
In all the years I've seen terrorist activity, I can't think of one instance where it worked...the IRA failed, Nelson Mandela failed, Arrafat failed, Red October failed, the Basques terrorists so far have failed, the Symbalees army failed...any peace was achieved by dialogue...Ghandi, as shown already, humbled the greatest empire the world had seen up to that time by peaceful methods.
And to the Kurd...how did the world find out about halabja?
Wasn't it a British camera crew (ITN) who risked their lifes to get the village and show the world for the first time what Saddam had done?
It was from that point onward that Sadam was brought to world emminence as a despot...but these sub human savages could have killed the very people who risked everything to show the world the horror of halabja.
and what did the Kurds do when the IRA undertook mass killings in Britain...or saw the attrocities happening in Rwanda...what did Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, Iran and so on do?...offer armies to invade Ireland or Rwanda and track down these people?...and what did you do?
They want the western powers to come and save their people, putting their serviceman lifes at risk, but when they do you find fault in there tactics.
And for those who say that since the Brits elected Blair then they are responsible for all his actions...wasn't Yasser Arrafat an elected politician, so it follows on then that all Palestinians are to blame for his political stance and actions then...of course not?
I really don't want to enter a political debate as this one has no answer and would be pointless, but some of the bullsh*t I've read here gets my blood boiling

I spent most of this afternoon trying to work out how i could upload the video off my phone so you could all see my video of what went on yesterday and writing out a longwinded post of my experience.... Seeing how this thread has gone i wont bother with that... I beleive the major british news outlets will make the videos they received available on their websites in the coming days ...so i'll let you know when you can see mine as i sent it to all of them....
Anyway... the way this thread has gone.. it has departed from what happened yesterday so theres little point in giving thoughts on it now and like rover i have no interest in a political discussion on this... But i must answer one poiont many have made here...
Over these pages i have read how the british people will live in fear etc etc.... Ive said it before and i'll say it again... We dont work like that... London will be its normal self as soon as everythings back up and running on monday morning... British spirit does not allow for this scaredness and letting things effect the way we live our lives...
I was walking between euston and russel square when the bus went up... My wife was standing on the platform at kings cross when the bomb on the train that had moments earlier left in front of her went off...
What followed was what i and most londoners would have expected... obviously a scramble to get out of the stations etc.. once ground level the emergency services were extraordinary and ushered people where to go... and everyone calmly went about doing what they were told... there was no mass panic or hysteria
Exactly what happened when i was present when the nat west tower was bombed... People laugh at the notion of british spirit... but it allways comes out and allways proves unbreakable...
On the first train that was allowed to leave euston that afternoon... what was the subject in the packed carriages?
Yes there was anger.. but in the most part people were asking each other whether they thought we would be able to get back into london for work the following morning... scared... my arse
My wife... as close as anyone would ever wanna get to these events... was at work on time last evening... She aint out of the ordinary... shes the norm.
Looking at today... with many major lines still closed... many many companies giving their staff the weekend off and the goverment telling you not to go to london today... London was not empty... Monday will be business as normal
If people really think they will break british will with these acts.. if they think they will cause fear, if they think they will scar us ... they are mistaken.... They caused chaos for a few ours and took innocent lives that will be mourned but tomorrow this will be a part of londons history not a shaping of its future...
This city has been wiped out by the plague, burned to the ground.. destroyed by the nazis, suffered decades of terrorist attacks and every time held its resolve and continued to become stronger than ever... This city, this country, its people will never be broken by such cowardly acts... it will only grow and unite...
Adversity is the air that the british spirit breathes... A dirty air that strengthens our resolve with every draw... We do not and never will allow our way of life and state of freedom to be swayed in anyway by these people...
