I only remember England from 1990, yes they're were a hype but nothing of the sort that came from 1996. From there they genuinely believed it's coming home, but why wouldn't it, thanks to the skinner and baddiel. Since then they've been in every tournament and the flags and believe has been insane, but it's like the euro 2020 defeat brought them down to earth, brought some humility and thanks to Southgateball the hype slowed down. Then came the win against the Dutch and they actually started to believe in the 'moments' that now they can win game without turning up. It's a funny story but I think they are getting closer, the new generation doesn't seem to be phased. Honesty I didn't see as many tears as I saw in euro 2020. I know I always say this but it's a matter of time.

That mentality aint gonna last forever if you don't win some of these finals. The fear will start to creep in again.

England won't have won a tournament for 60 years by the next World Cup, I don't think this is going to make it any worse.

I get the impression that England followers believe it is only a matter of time before they win something because of the players that keep coming through, but I think you need to get it right at a tournament, the coaching needs to be spot on and you get lucky. England had most of those things in this tournament but the coaching in one or two key moments could have been better, and then you need to be lucky. It's easy to forget that even with that mediocre performance, England nearly twice equalised at the end in the same phase. It's small things in tournaments.

Also, don't take anything away from Spain, they're a very good team, even if they don’t have a stellar selection of strikers to kill teams off. They're sneaky and horrible, they now mix up technique with physicality, can play short and long, quick and slow, they press extremely well. I just feel like with pressure in the right areas into England's key players and they could have caused a lot more problems. England were never going to have most of the ball in that game, but they needed to turn Spain quicker when they broke play up. I actually think Kane hinders the team in this regard. He's England's record striker and so has to play every game, but the way Southgate and the team play actually doesn't suit his strengths, they want a guy running in behind. But he'll score some goals as he's a predator and top striker, even when he looks about 70% fit.

i mean when a team gets behind 4 times and manages to equalize every time, it's not only luck. it takes character. but when a team basically never dominates a match, plays their first good 20 minutes in the semifinals, and can't regularly put one of europe's top strikers in a scoring position, then there are systematic problems.

I don't doubt the FA's capability to appoint someone worse to replace him, just pointing out his limitations. I actually have a lot of respect for him but if he's going to play like that with England he has to win.
