The mistake Deschamps made was still trying to play the same lousy negative football with Benzema and Rabiot on the pitch (fielding Rabiot is always a mistake btw). If you're going to play with these players, you have to attack consistently and go for 4-5 goals instead of leaning back. If he'd done that yesterday, they would have comfortably put Switzerland aside.

French performances weren't a surprise at all.

In 2018 they were the same frustrating act but they got away with it somehow. Restrained, calculated, second gear football, doing only the utmost necessary at all times, disgraceful in light of their talent pool.

DD = Cappello

England - Germany is a tough one to call. Who sucks less?

Hopefully Tuzzers stop blowing DD now and wishing for him every summer lol

Varane and Kimpembe just aren't that good. The difference was a fit Umtiti. If you look at their 2018 squad, they also had Matuidi. Not as technically gifted as their other players, but someone who is very determined to do what it takes.

Varane-Umtiti wasn't good either, that's why they played 4 CB's (Pavard and Hernandez) at the WC to make up. If they played Mendy at WC, they would have been leaked in a lot more goals imo.
The strength of their Euro squad is also overrated, no recognized fullbacks on either side, Rabiot and Lenglet in starting 11.
