Four CL spots is good for Juve though, not just Italian football.
More Italian teams in Europe equals more exposure for calcio, even more so if they succeed.
=
This exposure brings in more fans. The increased popularity also attracts star players to Italy, as well as helping retain the ones they already have (Kaka, Zlatan).
=
A popular league means higher TV ratings, as does a league with more star players, as King Ale pointed out.
=
All of the above benefits Juve, and here is y.
The new collective TV rights deal coming into effect next season (I think) divides the total value of domestic and foreign TV contracts based on numerous criteria, such as fan base, history, etc.
Juve will receive the largest chunk of the TV rights pie because we have millions of more fans in Italy and many more scudetti than Inter and Milan. It will only be a few million euro difference, but over the long run this adds up to a significant amount.
With increased participation and success in Europe the total value of these deals will get larger (which means more money for Juve). The best way to achieve this is with 4 CL spots.
Comparing the value of the new foreign EPL TV rights deals to that of 3 years ago clearly demonstrates that success in Europe reaps benefits at home. The new global EPL deal is worth at least a billion pounds. That is £355m more than the deal from 3 years ago.
Let’s not forget sponsors as well. The more viewers a league has, the more money the club is able to get from sponsors. Once again, look at the new deals signed by the EPL top 4 compared to those of years past.
Sure, our rivals will get more money as they progress in Europe, but as proven with Milan, this never helped them domestically. More importantly, our domestic rivals are in such shit financial condition that money from European progression does not give them an edge over us.
Inter runs a giant loss every year, as does Milan (although they are making good progress), and Roma are crippled by the debts of their parent company.
Juve on the other hand run a profit, have no crippling debt, and are about to move into a new stadium which will drastically increase our revenue.
One could argue that having only 3 teams in the CL means the UEFA market pool money will be divided by 3 teams instead of 4, meaning more money for those 3 teams. However, this difference is insignificant when compared to the money made off TV rights and sponsors, which is more likely to increase with 4 teams in Europe, not 3.
In conclusion, we need to look past our hate right now. 3 CL spots for Italy is yet more bad exposure that does absolutely no good for the bottom line.
