There is honour and respect to the game and there is "anything to do to score"

Gerrard could have explained that is not, and maybe the penalty wouldn't have been given.

Those scenarios are always 2 sided.

Imagine it was Delpiero who faked jumped and got awarded that penalty, some would be proud and some would feel the shame..

In that case. Cheating is part of the game. We've all seen similar plays go uncalled probably hundreds of them in our lifetimes. Yet no one makes a big deal unless it gains a call in the box. No one cares if it gets a free kick or an unwarranted corner. Those are all ok. When it warrants a penalty, everyone goes nuts. And to top it, it is completely the fault of the player not the referee who called it. Perhaps football is a dirty sport.

Or maybe it's that whenever something like this happens in Serie A it's do to bad reffing. How many threads do we have on the subject? There are oodles of evidence.

Yet if an EPL player benefits from a bad call, he's automatically a terrible person. Sounds a bit biased to me.
The problem for me personally is that Liverpool fans in Belgium always get off on saying that Liverpool players never dive and that Italians always dive. In reality it's pretty much vice versa. Fernando Torres and Gerrard are just about the biggest divers in the entire game. It really annoys me, because a lot of Belgian Liverpool fans racially abuse Italians.

Atletico Madrid should have had at least one penalty and the one Liverpool got was a disgrace. But all in all it doesn't change much.

@easy- the fact that pool dominated the game is neither here nor there, how many times have you won a game that you were awful in and sneaked a result? That does not justify anything!

The simple fact is that the defenders eyes are on the ball, Stevie g launches himself INTO the defender and sprawls himself all over the place. If anything it was a foul on the defender. The ref bottled it in the end. What gets me is that gerrard has always been a moral crusader when it comes to diving yet he is quoted in todays paper saying it was a clear penalty! Plus the attitude of the commentators who constantly ridicule foreign players for diving said nothing at all about the penalty! This double standard from the commentators and the players is what is behind peples resentment here

No, not really, I will show you WHY I find it extra annoying in EPL, here watch:

The fact whole of UK things they are frigging perfect just gentlemen like John Charles, never doing any dirty trick and such, and allways behaving impeccably. They are brainwashed morons who like to think they are morally superior to other football countries all over the world. Delusional enough to say hypocritical crap like Gerrard said (it would be ok if he was alone in this, but its their WHOLE thinking to think they are above everyone else, while acting exactly in the same way).

Now you know why would point out a dive like the above extra bit. Does it still sound biased to you? Because, I am accostumed to a life time of dives and divers, but NEVER can get accostumed to sanctimonious retarded crap like Gerrard said, and English football in general say all the time (they still deny Rooney dived against Arsenal years ago). I mean, I have seriously heard after a game of Totti being the best CL player of the week, playing greatly, but instead of that being the focus point of the game talk. What I hear instead is from the likes of Souness saying Totti is still a poofty nancy diver (out of nowhere, this game had nothing to do with it), that our champions like Gerrard can be great without being snide cheats etc (the kind of stuff that is said about italians, it would be totally nazi crap if the subject wasnt about football).

I KID YOU NOT. And Gerrard is costumed to hearing that, and is large part of this delusional culture of arrogant superiority complex.

Great Post Osman, saved me a bit of typing.

The worst matter is that this crap gets transformed to developing football countries like Australia. A Brazilian dived in the box last week to get a penalty and everyone hoped on these "bloody brazilians" and the culture of diving they bring into the league. And how the aussies and the british do not endorse that!

ohh and Rooney dived last weekend trying to get a penalty and that was not even mentioned by the commentator. If it was a foreigner than it would've been a real different matter.

Atletico Madrid defender Mariano Pernia claims the assistant referee who gave a penalty against him during the 1-1 draw with Liverpool has apologised.

Steven Gerrard's controversial injury-time penalty salvaged a draw for Liverpool after Pernia was harshly adjudged to have fouled the Reds skipper inside the box.

The penalty award infuriated the Atletico players as the draw saw them miss out on the chance of securing qualification to the knockout stages.

Pernia is adamant he did nothing wrong and that the assistant referee admitted his mistake.

"It was a very ugly decision by the linesman, but we all make mistakes, us players too, and I think the linesman made one here," said Pernia.

"In nobody's eyes was that a penalty. We're very hurt to have drawn the game in what was practically the final minute.

"It was an inexistent foul, Gerrard threw himself on top of me. It couldn't have been more clear.
Sorry
"The linesman said 'sorry, sorry' after the penalty was given. He had time to correct it and go back on it but he didn't."

Atletico's goalscorer Maxi Rodriguez also admitted the late penalty award was hard to swallow.

"It makes you so angry to draw like that," said Maxi.

"We'd been planning for this all week and then it's a shame that all gets thrown way in the final action of the game, and to be honest I think the referee made a mistake."
