CL: Roma's seventh circle of Hell
Roma put in their worst ever performance to lose 7-1 in Manchester and crash out of the Champions League.
The Giallorossi were without Max Tonetto and the suspended Simone Perrotta, although David Pizarro returned from his ban. There was very bad news in the warm-up, as Rodrigo Taddei - who scored in their other meeting - suffered a knee problem and made way for Mirko Vucinic.
Manchester United had Paul Scholes in the stands after his dismissal in the first leg and surprisingly gave Alan Smith his first Champions League start in 15 months. Luciano Spalletti's men had a 2-1 result to protect and Manchester United had never qualified after losing the first leg 1-0.
Francesco Totti drilled a right-foot strike just past the base of the near post from distance, then Vucinic skipped past Wes Brown only to balloon well wide.
Michael Carrick was more accurate with a curling screamer from almost 30 metres set up by Cristiano Ronaldo, swinging the finish round Philippe Mexes and into the far top corner. That early goal after just 11 minutes made it 2-2 on aggregate and Manchester United had the advantage on the away goals rule.
Ronaldo's weak finish failed to make the most of a wayward Alexander Doni clearance, but Manchester United were pouring forward and the Roma defence rattled. A Ryan Giggs flicked pass saw Cristiano Chivu slip and Smith buried it with only Doni to beat.
The Giallorossi barely had time to react when it was 3-0. Giggs rushed down the left flank and cut the cross back for Wayne Rooney to side-foot in off the inside of the far post from six yards.
Roma tried to fight back from that incredible sucker-punch start, Daniele De Rossi's glancing header wide from a Pizarro free kick.
Cristiano Ronaldo smashed a shot just past the upright and Totti's centre whipped past De Rossi's head. But there was only one team on the field and Carrick from a corner brought a tough save out of Doni.
Spalletti's men were totally shell-shocked and just before the break Cristiano Ronaldo sprung the offside trap, cut in and placed a perfect low strike between the 'keeper and the near post.
Totti nearly gave them a lifeline in first half stoppages, but Edwin Van der Sar beat away his free kick.
Instead, Manchester United made it 5-0 straight after the break. A corner kick was not cleared effectively and Cristiano Ronaldo beat Marco Cassetti to tap in Giggs' low cross at the back post.
Amantino Mancini's effort took a deflection off Brown and from the resulting corner only a Rio Ferdinand goalline clearance prevented Totti from at least getting his name on the scoresheet with a header. The Roma fans helped their team as well by continuing to hold up their scarves, loudly chant and sing the club anthem.
It didn't stop Manchester United from scoring a sixth goal, as Carrick completed his brace with another fizzing shot from distance into the far top corner.
