Real? Someone Teach Them To Defend!-Carew
9/14/2005 10:25:00 AM
Lyon hero John Carew blasted Real Madrid’s defense in the wake of the French champs amazing win over the Liga giants.
“They have a lot of champions, and in-front they are extremely dangerous. But on defense, they don’t know how to defend. This is their problem,” he said after the 3-0 thrashing.

“Robinho is fantastic though. It’s a pleasure to see him play,” added the former Valencia and Roma player.

The Norwegian opened the scoring last night early in the first half.

And Zlatan will say

"Shut up Carew. No matter what you say, what you can still do with a football, I can still do it with an orange."

:D

Carew is just stating the obvious of the past three years. It still amazes me that Real fans keep trying to argue that their defense is secure enough to win and that Perez did not disregard that department area. Call it either blind support of Perez or just lack of football knowledge, anybody can tell you they have a problem with defending. Luxemburgo certainly is partly at fault for this, however even fielding two defensive midfielders did not really work. Hopefully we will see more performances like this from the Galacticos.

Selling their best defender and buying a player who has never played in Europe to play in a big team and buying one of Spain's best player last season to make him play in a different position, what do you call this?

Well, the local cheese guy is happy now. Udinese won 3-0 over Panthainakos, which isn't to shabby. Barcelona's next. :howler:

Miccoli had a fantastic game for Benfica...first he hit the bar just after the start of the game, than he had 2 or 3 chances, created by himself, and he scored a goal at the end,for benfica's victory.
Great player he is!!!!

Cosmi relishes dream Euro debut Wednesday 14 September, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Serse Cosmi and the Udinese stars had to pinch themselves after thrashing Panathinaikos 3-0 on their Champions League debut.

“I might still be dreaming and not realised it, as to achieve this on a Champions League debut is incredible,” said Coach Cosmi. “We hope to carry on in this competition with the same enthusiasm and desire.”

The Friuli outfit had already beaten the odds by eliminating Sporting Lisbon in the preliminary round and are now the favourites to qualify from Group C along with Barcelona, who beat Werder Bremen 2-0 away this evening.

“It was a match we may have imagined in our heads, but never thought we could actually achieve with such accuracy. It was a difficult start because we were all obviously a little nervous, but we took control and Vincenzo Iaquinta’s opener gave us the confidence to adopt the tactical stance we prefer.”

“Following the second goal we played to the height of our abilities with 20 minutes of scintillating football. We may never be one of the giants, but this is a side that proved it has quality, entertaining play and solidity.”

There was no doubting who was Man of the Match, as Iaquinta netted a spectacular hat-trick with a header, his left and right foot.

“I told Vincenzo at half-time not to relax, as he had to work hard and make the most of every opportunity that came his way. Had there not been a few deflections, he would have scored even more. It’s good for lots of different players to score goals, but when you know you have a striker who is on this kind of form, it gives everyone a great sense of security.”

However, Cosmi is careful not to think all of Udinese’s problems are solved after winning all their opening five official games this season between Serie A and Europe.

“There is a fitness and psychological issue, as there are players here who are not accustomed to taking part in a crucial match every three days. Giampaolo Pinzi’s introduction proved decisive, as his fresh legs allowed us to win more balls back in midfield and the strikers did the rest.”

“The risk now is that the players could feel they are above reproach, but already in the dressing room I told the lads that this is a great moment and that it won’t always be like this. Even after the win at Roma, I saw a group of players who were happy, but in the right way and with an admirable maturity.”

The victory was over Alberto Malesani’s Panathinaikos and there was a strange backstory to this latest result.

“It was ironic, as I won my first ever Serie A match against Alberto Malesani with Perugia. At that time, we looked as if we were heading for relegation, but the Perugia fairy tale started from there.”

Malesani himself was less content after the 3-0 mauling at the Stadio Friuli and is now potentially up for the sack.

“It’s a shame, as we had the chances to equalise, but we aren’t very effective upfront,” said the former Parma and Fiorentina Coach. “That was partly my fault, as we aren’t on form at the moment and I preferred to field a more solid and balanced outfit. Let us admit that one man decided this match, as the tempo was relatively slow and he burst out to make the difference. He has matured a lot since I last saw him and he proved himself to be a great striker.”

Anyway tis is funny.

Ferguson: 'Rooney gave himself no chance'

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Wayne Rooney left referee Kim Milton Nielsen with no alternative other than to send him off during their goalless Champions League draw with Villarreal.

Rooney was shown his second yellow card after he sarcastically applauded the Dane's decision to book him for a second-half tackle on Quique Alvarez.

Rooney compounded his stupidity by continuing his argument with Nielsen - who famously dismissed David Beckham during the 1998 World Cup - before eventually making his way to the dressing room.

And Ferguson said: 'I think Wayne reacts to injustice - he felt he had been wrongly booked but you cannot applaud the referee.

'I actually thought it was for raising his hands but now I know it was for clapping the decision.

'He has given himself no chance - not with that referee.'

Only seven days ago Rooney lost his temper during England's World Cup qualifying defeat to Northern Ireland in Belfast.

At the time many critics suggested the 19-year-old would not suffer such a monumental loss of self control on United duty.

However, that theory was exploded out of the water this evening, with Ferguson now left with the task of ensuring it does not happen again.

He continued: 'Wayne is a young lad. He is only 19 years of age and we hope with maturity these things will evaporate.

'The important thing is to retain all his strength. We want to keep the good points and eradicate the bad ones.'

It was a second red card of Rooney's career, following a dismissal during his Everton days against Birmingham.

It means the striker will miss the September 27 clash with Benfica at Old Trafford, when United will look to build on tonight's point - one which will be overlooked in the wake of Rooney's indiscretion.
