Cosmi relishes dream Euro debut Wednesday 14 September, 2005

Serse Cosmi and the Udinese stars had to pinch themselves after thrashing Panathinaikos 3-0 on their Champions League debut.
“I might still be dreaming and not realised it, as to achieve this on a Champions League debut is incredible,” said Coach Cosmi. “We hope to carry on in this competition with the same enthusiasm and desire.”
The Friuli outfit had already beaten the odds by eliminating Sporting Lisbon in the preliminary round and are now the favourites to qualify from Group C along with Barcelona, who beat Werder Bremen 2-0 away this evening.
“It was a match we may have imagined in our heads, but never thought we could actually achieve with such accuracy. It was a difficult start because we were all obviously a little nervous, but we took control and Vincenzo Iaquinta’s opener gave us the confidence to adopt the tactical stance we prefer.”
“Following the second goal we played to the height of our abilities with 20 minutes of scintillating football. We may never be one of the giants, but this is a side that proved it has quality, entertaining play and solidity.”
There was no doubting who was Man of the Match, as Iaquinta netted a spectacular hat-trick with a header, his left and right foot.
“I told Vincenzo at half-time not to relax, as he had to work hard and make the most of every opportunity that came his way. Had there not been a few deflections, he would have scored even more. It’s good for lots of different players to score goals, but when you know you have a striker who is on this kind of form, it gives everyone a great sense of security.”
However, Cosmi is careful not to think all of Udinese’s problems are solved after winning all their opening five official games this season between Serie A and Europe.
“There is a fitness and psychological issue, as there are players here who are not accustomed to taking part in a crucial match every three days. Giampaolo Pinzi’s introduction proved decisive, as his fresh legs allowed us to win more balls back in midfield and the strikers did the rest.”
“The risk now is that the players could feel they are above reproach, but already in the dressing room I told the lads that this is a great moment and that it won’t always be like this. Even after the win at Roma, I saw a group of players who were happy, but in the right way and with an admirable maturity.”
The victory was over Alberto Malesani’s Panathinaikos and there was a strange backstory to this latest result.
“It was ironic, as I won my first ever Serie A match against Alberto Malesani with Perugia. At that time, we looked as if we were heading for relegation, but the Perugia fairy tale started from there.”
Malesani himself was less content after the 3-0 mauling at the Stadio Friuli and is now potentially up for the sack.
“It’s a shame, as we had the chances to equalise, but we aren’t very effective upfront,” said the former Parma and Fiorentina Coach. “That was partly my fault, as we aren’t on form at the moment and I preferred to field a more solid and balanced outfit. Let us admit that one man decided this match, as the tempo was relatively slow and he burst out to make the difference. He has matured a lot since I last saw him and he proved himself to be a great striker.”
