To get things back on an even keel the old system of a home and away leg would be far better.”

The negative side is the overload of games as between the 7th and the 31st of January Barça will have to play no less than eight games in 24 days
.
I completely agree with this statements, this system of tournament is just torturing Barca or any other Club that would have played it.

m_elyyan,

do you know that the flight from Tokyo to say London takes about only 13 hours. It takes a little bit less time reach L.A. from Japan, but from my knowledge, it takes additional 6-7 hours to reach South America from U.S. So it actually takes longer for the South American teams to arrive than the Europeans.

Oh did I also mention that Europeans are middle of their season, whilst South Americans ended theirs. If Barca is tired at this time of year, and I am perplexed as to when Europeans play their "supposedly" A-game. Not in the first few months of the season since they are getting into shape. Not in decemenber because they are tired. And not in the end, because each players went through 40 matches or so. If anything the South Americans go through even hard schedule in their respect countries with 60 matches or so expected from their star players. Even here Johan Cryuff is talking smack.

Europeans on the balance of things should win these tournament. But they are not, and the reason for that is not all those crap Cryuff just talked about, though it may play a part in it, but simply South Americans are better than what you first think. The margin between two sides isnt far enough for Barca to regard the tournament as stroll in the park. If Europeans are far better as they were during the 90s, then they will win.

But even so, Internacional didn´t dominate the game, they could hardly be called a "better team".

And Internacional had the last championship game about a month ago, so they had all the time of the world to prepare for this match, cause surely it was important for them, while Barca has a terrible schedule right now and they played a number of hard games lately. ;)

Well, I agree with you to certain extent. As I have said, Liverpool too dominated last years tournament and yet found themselves at the loosing end. As a matter of fact, I can't remember convincing South American team since Riquelme led Boac against Real (Porto game was just a mid-night horror). So no disagreement in principle.:)

But what I disagree with many here is, they simply think "the world championship" title belong to Barca because they won CL. Its nobody's right and you have earn this title. Last time I checked, CL is strictly for Europeans so World Club Championship is only way to determine who is "better".

Beside, CL itself is often filled with bizzare results and under the new format hardly the best team "ever" get to win it these days anyway (Barca deserved their win last year though, they were simply the best team). Milan was superior every single department on the pitch to Liverpool who only arrived at final because (1) a correct goal wrongly disallowed (2) a dubious given to them by a ref. Arsenal barely finished 4th in their league last year because their main rival got buggered (literally) on the last day of the season. Porto as a CL holder? That was rather strong result.

The history shows European won during times when people have reason to suspect them to be better, and lost when South American were "regarded" to be better. In general, the pattern of trophy holders have been remarkably similar to the general reputation the teams hold, but only in recent years there have been a pattern of divergences with some bizarre results along the way. You can attribute other factors beside like Cryuff did, or rather you can claim European recent "reputation" is unjustified like I am doing here. Europeans are better but no that better, because large part of the glamor of CL is as much hype filled with money as it is with substance.

OK, but still I think the South Americans are in advantage due to the system of the tournament. Had it been the home and away leg as it is played in Champions League, the result would be completely different for sure.

That is exactly what I want to see my friend.:eyebrows:

I think those South Americans can give you guys good run for the money, though in the end Europeans should come out on top.:pint:

only the best win this cup
example: juventus:eyebrows:
Yeah I just want to point out Del Piero ranks his goal in this tournament as one of the best moment in his career. Paolo Maldini also talks about playing with glowing review and telling people how much of honor it was to him to participate in such a match. I feel Puyol's face when the Internacional lifted trophy pretty much sums of their mood. I think players do care about this torunament a lot more than the fans in general.

Of course, this event is even more prestigious than CL Final.

Well of course it's prestigeous. Del Piero after winning WC2006, said smth like: "well here I am, 10 years after being world champion with Juve, I win it with Italy"

It is very important, no doubt.

:disagree: no it isn't
it is a mickey mouse trophy
Tell that to Del Piero and Maldini.

In general, I believe players take victory and loosing in this tournament far better than the fans do. Its such a pity that South American couldnt save their life to win a game during late 90s. Because of that the tournament lost so many of its luster it had in the past. I remember Milan playing Sao Paulo (I might be wrong, I am calling out of my memory), and it was on the most pulsating match I ever seen.
