Carroll is one technical motherfucker too.
He is probably the least technical non defensive player i have seen in my life. Seriously man, the guy's got the touch of a rapist and the grace of a tractor.

He's more than technically gifted to play his position, which is what one is looking for, right?
Like Gabriel said, he's an intelligent player, but not really one you can label "technically gifted".

Its not necessarily a bad thing, different players have different attributes, Lampard has carved a successful career for himself, but by no means is he a technically gifted player. He won't trap an impossible ball with one touch for example ala a Xavi or a Pirlo.

You know i completely agree with your post, there is no denying that one of the reasons English teams started doing well in Europe in the last decade as opposed to the 90's is the huge influx of foreigners. So like i said i completely agree with your post. The only thing is, you picked a wrong example, i don't know if you're mixing up Baines with someone else, but Baines is one of the few English fullbacks that are technically proficient. He's good enough technically for a fullback, he's an amazing crosser of the ball, and he's great at set pieces.

That being said, you then look at other English fullbacks, Walker, Micah Richards, Onuha, and they are the biggest talentless hacks ever, even though some of them could be effective, as they're all pretty fast and strong, but technically they're just.... :D
Foreigners were always there. But in 90's those were terrible too. I remember Shaka Hislop and Okocha being stars of Premier League.

So Lampard is not a tecnical gifted player? Are we comparing him to Maradona?

By all means go and watch some youtube highlights.

He was ok but when he is labelled as most technical player in a league, you would think that league suck.
Are you talking about Jay-Jay Okocha? Because he never played Premier League in the 90s.

Lampard has decent technique. Its not his strong suit though, he clearly has other attributes which make him a very good player.

I dont think its a stretch for people to say most English Footballers have fairly poor technique.

I think its a very fair statement to make.
:agree:

When Italy played England at the Euros, you could see the English players were technically inferior to the Italians (esp in terms of ball control, passing and ball retention...the basics)

It was quite funny to see guys like Balzaretti and Diamanti show more skill and technique on the ball than Ashley Cole or Ashely Young.

Technique isn't just about being able to dribble the ball. Lampard always had good technique in controlling the ball and passing or shooting short or long range, he strikes the ball very well. The thing with English players is that they often have a very 'deliberate' and overstated technique when doing certain things, because it doesn't come naturally like it does for players from countries who have been playing a 'touch, dribble, pass' game since they were kids on the streets etc.

This I agree with. I f we compare a mediocre british football with a spanish ditto, then no doubt the english will lack technique.

And thank fucking 'god' for that. The diversity of football is what makes it fun and interesting. But stating as other have, that the best english footballers arent technically gifted and solely rely on kick & rush, that's just dumb and ignorant.

Yes Lampard has fabulous technique when it comes to taking a wild shot from 30M and have it ricochet off some poor blokes arse and into the goal :D
