Byrone does have a point though. They weren't world beaters by any means, but they were a quite decent team before Abramovic, Abramovic's money gave them the extra push that made them a world class team, but they were no Man city before the millions.
Yeah, we lacked stuff Roman and his money provided, but we were playing entertaining football. I love that era, even if we weren't winning shit. Zola was a joy to watch. :touched:

Seriously Chelsea under Gullit & Vialli were unpredictable & inconsistent but they were damn entertaining. Especially when Vialli would get pissed off with his players & put himself in the match.

Vialli was the man back then
.

Casiraghi was supposed to light up the epl but he probably had the worst debut season in the epl.:D

Yes. FA cup is not a prestigious trophy.
We never considered Portsmouth a Top team when they won it. Often times second division teams end up winning it or reaching the final 4.

I am not saying Chelsea were the equivalent of Wigan and West Brom before the Money came in, I am saying that they were no Arsenal or Man Utd class at all.

Lets not pretend that the Money did not make Chelsea what they are now... they were like the current Tottenham at best before the russian came.
When did you actually start watching football? FA Cup IS a prestigious trophy in England & also the fact that it gives a teams automatic entry into a european spot makes it prestigious to win. So that argument goes down the toilet.

Lets see, many don't consider teams like Celtic, Benfica, Porto, Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV & Red Star as big clubs & yet they've won european cups. Are those cups irrelevant because those teams are not prestigious enough?

Chelsea were certainly in their class but they lacked depth & a solid coach.Money did help Chelsea but they certainly have been big players in the EPL. When was the last time tottenham were in the CL, when was the last time they won something of note? Don't ever, ever try & make them out to be of the same calibre.

You really have a warped sense of footballing matters.

Same here. I only followed the epl because of Arsenal & Chelsea when they started bringing in the foreign players.

Roberto Di Matteo was also a joy to watch but that useless Frank Leboeuf was something else alonside Desailly.:D

But my fav epl player back then had to be david ginola without a doubt. The man was a footballing magician.

That was Roman's single biggest contribution. Without his billions, Chelsea doesn't get Jose and things don't happen as quickly as they did.

Before Roman, Chelsea were like Tottenham and Man City today.
Tottenham & Man City hardly ever qualify for CL & they hardly came close to winning any silverware.

But i do agree that Abramovic accelerated things for Chelsea.

Lebouef

Arsenal has had their share of players i've really liked too, but i always preferred Chelsea.

Ginola, he was a great player, i remember the commentators over here saying "whenever you need him, David Ginola will deliver" or something to that effect.

But the player who caught my eye back then was the guy in my avatar, he was a true great. His goal in the cup final, the one against Utd or the one against norwich :touched:

Of course, glad he didn't go to Pool back then.
A team which also won the FA cup twice in the 90's? Tottenham won it once in the same 10 years.
In Terms of History, Tottenham's History is greater than Chelsea's in terms of successes.

FA Cup win does not make a team a top one. Porto , Benfica and the likes are teams that regularly win their Leagues and conquered europe at some point. Chelsea, Never. Now they have the potential to do so but never before.

Chelsea were almost never world beaters or EPL title Challengers before the money came in. They were a team that was worthy of Europa League spots and occasionally CL ones.

Again, I am not saying they were in the level of Wigan or Man City, I am saying they were nothing like Arsenal or Manu.

Putting the pre-money Chelsea next to Manu and Arsenal is insulting them.

i actually agree with Byron on this,Chelsea ghad been big spenders for quite a few years, the problem is that they had run into some financial problems and Abramovic was interested...however they needed to make the CL and Ranieri pulled it off. they were not title winning contenders but they were top 4 material.

oh and the FA cup in England and Scotland carries a great degree of prestige within the clubs, players and supporters. i know it is treated witha degree of disdain on the continent but in Britain the cup is something every team wants to win

"Accelerated" implies that Chelsea becoming a world beater was inevitable which is not true.

Pompey are a great team that will inevitably become one of the top 5 teams in the world. They have reached 2 Finals of a very prestigious trophy, winning one of them, in the past 5 years.

Thing is hist character is probably in his early 20's & has never seen Chelsea play in the 80's or early 90's. Now he uses wikipedia to back up his ludacris claims & current epl situation.

That said i wont bother with him again. Really warped view of footie, honestly.

The thing worth remembering with Chelsea is that they were on the verge of financial ruin, they would have been another Leeds but for Abramovich, they might have been a strong team beforehand but they were chasing the dream and couldn't sustain it.
