Buffon is the best keeper of all time*, Fred. Casillas is not even top 3 currently.

* By all time, I mean in the time I've been watching football.
unfortunately Spains 1-0 wins in the World Cup will look,on record, rather favourably for Casillas. though, for me he is not even half the keeper Buffon is but that is an unfair comparison as Gigi is quite possible the best keeper i have ever seen

As a goalkeeper myself, Buffon > Casillas, but not by much IMO. Buffon is more consistent and overall better than Casillas or any other goalkeeper, but i wouldn't mind Buffon or Casillas in my team..

So.. tell me Fred, was Barthez world class? :D

When at his best he was world class, but he was too prone to errors, silly ones that cost his team a lot to be considered world class.

Casillas is nothing like that at all. The two cannot be compared.

Thats just stretching it. When was the last time Buffon had a full season?

If anything Casillas has been better than Buffon in the past few years.

Casillas has been in the top 2 keepers of the last decade without a doubt. He was the best keeper in the last WC, though that had more to do with the lack of quality keeper performances but still he was instrumental in both the final and the quarter final against Paraguay. Casillas was the best keeper in Euro 2008 too, and he was a lot better than Buffon in that tournament.

Last season both Casillas and Buffon were rather poor, the season before it(2008-2009) J.Cesar was better than both of them. From 2006 up until 2008, IMO Casillas was better than Buffon, 2006-2007 because Buffon was in Serie B and 2007-2008 Casillas was the best in the world and iirc he was even given the best player in the Liga that season(not so sure about this though).

On a more related note.

"As an Arsenal fan, for me, I want him to stay at Arsenal. However, I would also understand if he goes back home".

"What I want to do is, when I retire from playing, I don't know how, but I want to come back to Arsenal".

Dunno about that one, tbh i would take Buffon,J.Cesar,Van Der Sar and Cech before considering Casillas.

Van Der Saar has been really good for United, but he was a joke for Fulham, i was shocked when United first bought him, though in hindsight, obviously he has been a great signing.

Cech has been much worse than Casillas in the past few years, he isn't even considered one of the best in the Premiership anymore. He hasn't been the same player ever since the Cunt err i mean Hunt incident. As for J.Cesar he has been world class in the past 3 years, but Casillas has been one of the best ever since 2002 when he singlehandedly kept Real Madrid in the final game against Leverkusen despite only playing 20 minutes.

Frankly I think the only reason Casillas is underrated by some is because of the poor defense he has in front of him, the inevitable result of constant pressure is that he'll crack sometime and make mistakes. Some of the saves he has pulled over the years and some of his performances have been amazing. Watch him next season when Real have a real coach, and consequently a proper defense in front of Casillas.

As for your last comment, :agree:

Agree about the Cech part, though before the incident he was better than casillas, imo that guy was really something, yet he still won the golden gloves in prem this season if my memory serves me well. He still pulls great performances from time to time and he's still young, maybe he could regain some level though he would've been far better than he could possibly get now.

You could find dark spots over every keeper's career, Casillas hasn't been brilliant bar some games and his team has not helped him at all, you could say the same team thing about Buffon though Casillas had by far a better team in the last few seasons.

I always rated Van Der Sar, he had hard times at Juve and Fulham (fulham's defence wasn't very good though) but during the last half of the decade he's been huge and has actually contributed a lot to united, i still get angry when i remember that penalty he saved from anelka in the CL final.

Cesar.. well i don't wanna get into that, since i hate him

You would assume that being captain of his club/NT Casillas would be able to deal with the pressure although he has pulled some great saves. some mistakes are like amateur mistakes and i tend to watch real week in week off, my brother and a close friend are madridistas to death and i always hear them ranting about Casillas. :D

The reason Casillas isn't as good as Buffon is simple - he has made far more mistakes. You can count complete fuck ups by Buffon over his career on one hand, Casillas has made many, and the reason for that is that the positional and judgemental side of his game are what he is weakest at. In terms of shot stopping, brilliant, he is extremely agile and deals with high balls generally well. Both can make great saves and have great games, both have won tournaments, but if people are talking about Casillas ahead of Buffon then they don't understand what makes a great goalkeeper. I guess out of sight out of mind. If we are talking Buffon with a back problem against Casillas right now then fair enough, but over their careers just no way.

"It is hard to know where to begin when it comes to pinpointing his outstanding qualities, he has so many. And it's impossible to pick out a weakness. One of the most important qualities in a goalkeeper is calmness – an ability to stay cool under pressure is very important – and if he can transmit that quality to the defence and to his team-mates, it has a very positive effect on the way the team play. Buffon's presence reassures his colleagues. He is the contemporary keeper everyone playing in goal looks up to and aspires to emulate."

I never said Casillas was better than Buffon Juvejay, i said people over her exaggerate the difference between the two. There isn't much between them, and contrary to popular belief over here, there is no general consensus that Buffon is definitely better. The debate over who the better keeper is, is still ongoing. I personally am on the Buffon camp, but people here make it sound like the two keeprs aren't even comparable, which imo is not true at all
