€35m for Andy Carroll is an abomination. Half a good season in the PL...

Still, it's the PL and silly season. Interesting gamble by Liverpool. Torres was never going to be the same so they might as well sell him. I suppose it's like Juve selling Buffon and Chiellini and making big gambles, you lose and hope you can win longer term.
It was £35m. Looks like it was a panic buy more than anything else.

From local reporter/friend of Carroll, text conversation:

Sunday 30th January 14:37

SW: Are you leaving mate?
AC: I'm not going anywhere mate.

Monday 31st January 16:28
SW: Liverpool in for you mate. Any truth in that?
AC: Dunno what's happening yet still mate. Thanks.

17:02
SW: Sky Sports say it's a matter of time mate. What's club said?
AC: they have kind of said we don't want u but want me to say I wanna go. And I said I don't want to go.

17:26
SW: Have you put in a transfer request?
AC: No I didn't that's what I mean that's what they wanted me to do and I said no.

17:27
SW: So they want you to go?
AC: They said they wanted to accept it.

17:28
SW: So you have no choice?
AC: Looks like it.

17:31
SW: Your agent will be doing ok out of this. When you going?
AC: I don't know mate. Gutted tho.

17:32
SW: Any message you want put across to the fans? I'm happy to do that for you mate.
AC: They said they wanted the money.

17:37
SW: Anything else?
AC: Gutted to be leaving Newcastle but I was kind of pushed out the door.

17:41
SW: That it?
AC: Just what i've just said really. Gutted to be leaving my home club but I was practically told to go. Didn't want to leave that's why i signed a 5 year deal.

AC: Sound mate.

17:56
SW: Can you give press lads a call to do an interview when deal done?

Props to Carroll, but can't really blame Newcastle, this was a masterstroke.

I can soooo see Drogba going to Real come this summer transfer window.
:agree:

I'm still trying to understand how liverpool could pay more for Carroll then Suarez. Carroll is gonna crack under that sort of pressure.
Carroll is English.

Drogba - Torres. This is dream duo for EPL. Let's see how they work.
I'm far from convinced that they will work.

Both players are at their best when they are the main man, pretty much as a lone striker.

Which of them is going to do thankless running into the channels to open up space for other players?

Still can't justify that price tag.
No, but Carroll is a very good, young player.

If moving to Liverpool gets him away from his mates in Newcastle and results in him maturing a bit, he can end up being a really top class striker in the not too distant future.

And it was never going to be possible for a sensible negotiation to take place when Newcastle knew Liverpool were about to get £50m for Torres.

For Carroll to succeed, he'd need a secure team to achieve that along with a coach that believes in him. What happens when Liverpool bring in more attackers? As i said regarding the price tag, it was a panic buy imo.

In England they think Carroll is the new Alan Shearer, so you have to add that into the price, but it's still far too much looking at face value. Factor in that he is a tosser and has been in trouble on several occasions culminating in him having to live with Kevin Nolan to keep an eye on him, as a court condition. It'll be interesting to see how that'll work now :D Maybe he'll grow up.

If he scores like he did for Newcastle it'll look like a bargain, but it's quite a big 'if'.
