I can't understand Wenger choosing not to toughen Arsenal up.

Arsenal's best teams always had 3 or 4 tough players in them.

Think when there was Vieira and Petit in midfield or Vieira and Gilberto. You need that solid base so that the creative players can do their thing.

Arsenal need to sign themselves a mean fucker or two i.e a hard CM/DM a la Vieira, Poulsen, Gattuso etc.

Yaya Toure should be the priority for January.
exactly. Our midfield is probably the most lightweight in the whole league. Unfortunately we missed out on Toure in the summer, now he proved Guardiola wrong and he's starting games for Barca, near impossible to get him.

Bad luck.

When I saw the midfields in the last Arsenal Man Utd game I realised how much better the EPL used to be.

I'd much rather watch Keane, Scholes, Vieira and Gilberto knocking lumps out of each other than watch Carrick, Anderson, Fabregas and Denilson playing pretty passes.

Gilberto could put himself about when he needed to.

By the time he left Arsenal he was too slow to really get in about the opposition properly.

It also used to be good when Fergie would shove Phil Neville into midfield to try and bully Arsenal.

He used to do the same at Aberdeen. On one notable occasion he pushed Alec Mcleish, a CB, into midfield to play against Celtic. This was in addition to the two hard men that usually played CM for Aberdeen at the time, Cooper and Simpson.

He wasnt weak, but mentally, he never wanted to get stuck in. He positionally covered space and went after loose balls, but he hardly ever went for the challenges or tackles. I vividly remember his game, because it was unique seeing a DM a who hardly ever wants to tackle, or even tries to.

Remember having puzzling discussions about him with Gooner fans in XT, dude is there covering, but hardly tackles at all. Btw, regarding XT, are you the new poster with the name "Fred"? Not asking becuase of the name, but similar posts.

Ya i was never a fan of his myself. He didnt like to get stuck in and always avoided physical contact, its what gave a lot of people the impression that he was weak.

Not to mention he was a horrible passer.

Yes, thats me.

Apparently Robinho was chosen as captain as he is the first one on the training pitch, and the last one off, in training he is apparently influential and always tries to better the squad.

This was told to me by a guy who saw a mark Hughes interview, not sure if its all correct as he told me about it before the Hull-City game
