I think we should keep Hernanes as a depth option. We cannot sell him for much, and his performance was good at year end. Pereyra makes more sense because he is actually sell-able.

James can play as a CM and a secondary striker.

James is terrible as CM, that's the whole point of why he is flopping, he is misused in that position.

Definitely true - IMO the only way he'd work as a CM is in a Pogba role where his defensive responsibilities are very muted (Mezzala), still not optimal though. That being said, he'd be a good secondary striker.

James has a great work ethic, now in RM he's just depressed and very unhappy, unmotivated. When he's on his game he's one of the hardest working guys at his position.

I think I disagree with every one of those points:

-Overpriced? We just paid 94 million for Higuain. James is under 25, and a world class talent.
-Overvalued? synonym as overpriced
-Inconsistent? Maybe at CM. As a CAM/Winger, he is incredibly consistent. See his performances with Colombia/Porto/Monaco.
-No work ethic? On what basis? Being limited defensively doesn't mean lazy. He isn't strong enough defensively to be a CM.

If we bought James, he'd become a club legend IMO.

It's tough when you play behind Bale & Ronaldo. James is a very attack minded player, and in a 4-3-3 is optimal as a playmaking winger. He just doesn't suit Zidane's Madrid. As a CAM or secondary striker with a free role, we'd see a much better James IMO.

James was a stupid purchase by Madrid, but Madrid doesn't purchase on the basis of fit, but rather by marketability. It is tough when great players have support roles. Think about Sanchez on Barcelona. He was basically splitting time with Pedro, because he was a support player to Messi. I think anyone would argue Sanchez is much better than Pedro, but it is hard to demonstrate that in a support role. I think James is similar. With more offensive responsibility, he would shine more. Unfortunately, Bale and Ronaldo are the faces of that team.
