Newcastle United have agreed a club record fee with Real Madrid for England striker Michael Owen.

The Magpies are determined to bring the former Liverpool forward to St James' Park even though he has expressed a preference for returning to Anfield.

Owen has indicated he would only join Newcastle on loan but The Magpies have agreed terms with Real, a club they are used to doing business with after selling Jonathan Woodgate to the Spanish giants.

The striker seems certain to move on from the Bernabeu this summer, following crunch talks with Real president Florentino Perez on Tuesday, and he admitted it would likely be a straight fight between Liverpool and Newcastle for his signature.

The England forward suggested his preferred choice was to head to Liverpool, adding he would only consider a loan move to St James' Park in what is a World Cup year.

However, these comments have not deterred Newcastle who have announced they have agreed a club-record fee with Real for the striker.

"Newcastle United have met Real Madrid's asking price and conditions," a statement on the club's website read.

"The agreed fee will be a record transfer fee for Newcastle United.

"It is now up to the player and his advisor."

Much will now depend on whether Magpies chief Graeme Souness can persuade the 25-year-old to pledge his future to Newcastle.

Owen's prowess in front of goal would give Newcastle a huge fillip, as they have yet to replace departed pair Craig Bellamy and Patrick Kluivert and are reliant on Alan Shearer, who is the current club-record signing at £15 million, ploughing a lone furrow in attack.

However, he has indicated that he is not keen on making a permanent switch to the North East and the offer from Tyneside could flush out other interested parties - with Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton all linked with the speedy forward.

If Newcastle get hold of Owen, they could achieve something this season. Their midfield finally looks good, they've gotten rid of most of the wasters and the defense looks better than usual (though that doesn't say much). If they don't get him, this could be a long, hard season for them. Shearer can't score everythig himself; not anymore.

Another impressive display from Aliaksandr Hleb for Arsenal  Glad to see one of my favourite players doing well in his debut Premiership season.

Chelsea are up again, would be fun if they could keep winning the full 38 rounds :D
I could see Chelsea breaking Arsenal's 49-game unbeaten streak, that's how ridiculous this situation is. They might as well start their celebrations already, even if it does make them lose focus..

As for Hleb, I'm pissed we did not go after the kid. I have always been impressed when I have seen him play, and IMO he would be the prefect replacement for Pavel Nedved.

Of course I do - their coach is Dutch, they also have Edgar Davids. Plus, they're the underdogs and I like that.

What the hell are you still doing awake anyway? This flexible hour thing is getting out of hand :D

No you dont deserve to win anything based on how money you have, it depend on how you perform in the field:(
That's true, but also the situation in the field is directly created by the money you have.It is not the same if your coach is Ranieri or Mourinho...it is not the same if you have Ambrosio( Jurgen Macho) or Cech as a keeper....It is not the same if team's defence is hollow or if it broke the EPL 16 conceded goals per season record.
Abramovich dictates the football market now,and honestly you shoul be scared.
Abramovich is the guy which has something about 10 billions Euros...with that ammount you could easily buy a small country. His account is rapidly growing. He is foreman (taikun) who acquires his money by some unfair business, which is obvious for a rich man from Russia or any other ex comunist state.
Chelsea has players,disciplinarian,discipline,MONEY...what exactly do they need more?

Chelsea is a very lucky team , they did not deserve to win against arsenal , the ball hit the foot of drogba by mistake.
But they destroyed WBA yesterday 4-0 (Super Frank 2,Drogba,Cole).
I would like that Juve has such a luck.

Does that mean that Madrid had to win the Liga over the past years? Why didn't they then?

Thing is, Chelsea have gathered 6 points in their first two games and the maximum they deserve was 2 points, are the 4 points achieved a reward for the money they spent? Come on, I thought you were smarter than that.
Sorry for disappointing you Jeeks, but I disagree now!
They did 29 times in the past,it is not a small number. They did that because they are rich ,of course.
Name me just one team from 3 major leagues in Europe which is constantly winning the national championships, and doesn't have money.
Unfortunately, football become impressive business, and the reputation is created with money, over the last 10 years racily.
The only team which is inexplicable is inter, and it remains a great mistery to me.

m_elayyan was talking about the games against Wigan and Arsenal. His post was BEFORE Chelsea played against WBA.
