Hey ashwin, how do you rate Hleb? Do you reckon he's got what it takes to hold down a regular first team place?

tbh, i've only seen him play during preseason. and i can't really judge from watching non-competitive games. but from what i've heard of his time at stuttgart, he seems to be a really promising player. time will tell, and at 24, he's got time on his hands.

liverpool spent 32 million pounds in 2004. arsenal spent 18 million pounds in that same year.

and lets look at this year. how many players have liverpool bought: Antonio Barragan, Jose Reina, Mohammed Sissoko, Boudewijn Zenden and Peter Crouch. now barragan and zenden came on free's (zenden no doubt having a massive signing on fee, but we'll ignore that; just for arguments sake). sissoko came for 5.5 million, crouch for 7 million, reina for 6 million. making a grand total of 18.5 million pounds spent this summer by liverpool.

arsenal on the other hand, bought hleb for around 7 million pounds (upto ten depending on performances). oh and they got song on loan.

so now you tell me, who's spent more this year?

i could do this year after year after year, and arsenal would have spent less money than liverpool.

face it, its not money that matters. the recent liverpool team is just shite.
of course we did because we just got a new coach! kind of normal-wenger has had years to work with arsenal. shite team, well, no offense but for a shite team we did alright...it's not just talent, but guts ;) it is pretty nice to win in europe, you know....oh wait, you wouldn't know :D no actually I like arsenal and would much rather see them on top than chelski or manure

for the amount they've spent, and for all the hype on benitez's arrival i think liverpool have done very poorly. success in europe is always sweet, and congradulations to liverpool for achieving that. but the manner in which they won it, well it was anything but convincing wasn't it?

anyways season kicks of today (FINALLY!) so lets see how arsenal is vieira-less and what liverpool can do now that benitez has settled in. 5th place should not be acceptable for a team like liverpool, they really should be fighting for 4thor 3rd.

Full time from Goodison Park: Everton 0-2 Manchester Utd (van Nistelrooy, Rooney)

The first half was very keenly contested with Everton creating the better chances. Marcus Bent came on for the injured James Beattie and the hosts began to control the proceedings. Cahill tested van der Sar before Bent hit the crossbar but on the stroke of half time United took the lead. Rooney set O'Shea down the left on an overlap and his low cross was finished emphatically by RVN.

The game was over as a contest 30 seconds into the second half when Rooney made Everton pay for an errant Yobo back pass. The goal seemed to take the sting out of David Moyes' team and it was pretty comfortable for Man Utd thereafter.

Cahill got into good positions and was probably Everton's most potent threat. Arteta and Neville did reasonably well in midfield too. Park was somewhat wasteful in front of goal but on the whole made a solid Premiership debut. RVN took his goal well and Rooney was imo Manure's best player. He kept possession well, played some lovely passes and got a goal on his return to Goodison Park.

There's no shame in losing to a team like Man U. Everton gave a good account of themselves in patches and were slightly unlucky not to get on to the scoresheet. I don't think they could've done anything to prevent the first goal which was a lovely move by Manure and a bad mistake early in the second half put the game beyond them. Moyes is a good manager, I'm sure Everton will bounce back and push for one of the Uefa Cup spots for next season.

PREMIERSHIP ROUND-UP

Tottenham won at Portsmouth, even without new signing Edgar Davids, to give Martin Jol the perfect start to the campaign.

An Andy Griffin own goal was followed by Jermain Defoe's well-taken second strike which assured Spurs of all three points.

There were four goals inside the first nine minutes at Aston Villa but the game with Bolton Wanderers finished at 2-2.

Kevin Phillips, on his debut, and Steve Davis were the Villa goalscorers with Kevin Davies and Ivan Campo on the scoresheet for the visitors.

Fulham and Birmingham City drew 0-0 at Craven Cottage. Brian McBride did have the ball in the net but it was disallowed for off-side and Collins John squandered a late opportunity.

West Ham started well with a 3-1 win after Blackburn Rovers, despite falling behind to Andy Todd's first half goal.

Evergreen Teddy Sheringham levelled matters before Nigel Reo-Coker's screamer edged The Hammers ahead. Soon after Matthew Etherington added a third, Paul Dickov was sent off for a wild lunge at Paul Konchesky.

Manchester City and West Brom failed to find the net in a goalless draw at The City of Manchester Stadium with Chris Kirkland in inspired form for The Baggies.

Ten-man Charlton Athletic emerged victorious 3-1 at Sunderland thanks to Danny Murphy's quality free kick and two goals from Darren Bent. Former Liverpool man Murphy struck soon after Darren Ambrose was sent off for a bad challenge on Stephen Wright.

Andy Gray had netted on his debut, cancelling out Darren Bent's opener as the Charlton striker also got off the mark quickly for his new club. Bent made it day to remember by sweeping home the clincher deep into injury time.

Manchester United kicked things off with a 2-0 win at Everton in the first PremPlus fixture.
Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney scored either side of half time for the visitors.

The first half was simply boring, but after Ehigou was sent off for catching Duck Feet Gerrard in the second half the match became much more lively. Gerrard should have scored a few goals, and the passing in midfield I saw today was etrocious.
