An Islamist is someone who firmly believes that Islam is the best and only way to govern. He or she most probably is a member or supporter of political Islam.

How can a Muslim believe that something is better than Islam? That would be a walking contradiction.

Spreading Islam is the duty of every Muslim and canon of the faith. By this definition, Muhammad and his companions too were Islamists, no? They dedicated their lives to make sure that Islam reached as many people as possible and achieved miraculous victories on their path. All prophets and messengers struggled with communities in order to convince them that Islam was the best for them.

There is no political Islam. Just like there is no spiritual Islam or scientific Islam. It's alpha and omega in a Muslim's life and governs every aspect of it.

If that was the case there would be no shiaa or sunni or khawarij, it's really astounding how the works of people like maududi have now become canon, but at the same time not really surprising considering how no one bothers to read or research the subject.

If what exactly was the case? I don't know about maududi, I'm talking about the fundamentals of the faith based on the teachings of its messengers and divine revelation. One who is a Muslim subscribes to every part of the faith and believes it to be the superior to any other belief, with no cherry picking.

Regarding offshoot sects, well that is natural and to be expected. Muslims believe that even other Abrahamic religions came as Islam and got distorted. People of the sunnah constitute like over 80% of the worldwide "Muslim" population and is the canon. But they are so pathetic and splintered because they have forgotten their faith so that even shiites have managed to unite and kick their sorry asses.
