I have BeIN and, over the course of the week, I usually watch every Serie A, most Bundesliga, and a few La Liga games.
Wow, bud! Where do you find the time? That is awesome. I don't get access to the Bundesliga games on the streaming account. Would love access to those, but don't rock cable tv
From what I've seen I would say Dybala is interesting and promising. Talented for sure. But no where near 30m. He hasn't proven himself in any capacity beyond the hype. I'll ask you - where was this Dybala hype last summer? Why no talk of him then? He got minutes. Answer. He was largely unimpressive. Now, the system has changed in his club and he has developed. But he hasn't done it over any period of time. And he's even started to taper off in terms of production recently. And yet we're talking like 40m would be a steal for him. You say if we don't get him another club will for 40m. Well, that may be true. But other clubs have spent 40m on busts and one-year-heroes before too. Thing is: we can't make that kind of a mistake. We can't afford a 40m for a player who turns out to be a flash-in-the-pan.
It doesn't sound like he's been tapering off the past couple of weeks, it seems like he's been involved in basically all of Palermo's goals -- with assists, or creating the buildup. Also hit a couple posts, if memory serves, but I didn't catch the games myself. Just watched highlights.
40M isn't a steal for him, it's what I believe another team is likely going to pay for him. It's a ridiculous market out there, we know that. When the rumors first started popping up, I was thinking 25M plus bonuses would be about the deal. It doesn't sound like that is going to cut it, although Zamp is full of shit, so who knows. His agent was indicating there were other interested parties, though.
Really don't think we'll spend 40M on him, but I really don't think he'll bust, either -- wherever he ends up.
You compared him to Iturbe in terms of production and, while I believe that fair, I was only using that comparison in terms of the hype. The hype HERE was very real for that kid and he was linked to English clubs and such too. Look how expensive that flop turned out for Roma.
I didn't just compare the two in terms of production, though. One is far and away a more intelligent player on the pitch. Also, more poise on the ball, better vision/passing, better movement off the ball, better close control, ability to change speeds, a better finisher... he's a much better player, as far as I can tell. Solid work ethic, and he's a leader for that team, you can tell by the way he interacts with his teammates.
But I'll do a performance comparison of my own. Berardi. Italian. Not as flashy. Not as sexy in terms of name hype or ethnicity hype.
16 goals last year, 6 assists. 11 goals this year, 6 assists. He's played less than Dybala this year (about 500 minutes less) and has two goals less. And he's done it for almost two years in a row now. Does he have the hype surrounding him like Dybala? No, he does not. But he's done it for two years now and, more importantly in my mind, he's cheaper so we can afford to take a risk and not be stuck with a 40m flop. Last ten games for Dybala: 2 goals, 4 assists. Last ten games for Berardi: 6 goals, no assists.
I like Berardi. Doesn't have the same level of technical ability, doesn't create for others in the same way. Plays a different style of game. From what I have seen, he's no Dybala, and I see him as more of a winger moving forward... but I like him. That will be an interesting decision for Beppe
Nobody can say how Dybala will turn out. Nobody. But we can say he has improved greatly this year compared to last. But in such a small window of work, how can we excuse spending 40m on him? Because we think he might grow to be a superstar and worldbeater? How many careers can we name of youngsters who score 20 goals (which Dybala probably won't even hit this year) who then were bought and sold for millions and disappeared? Marlet? Jeffers? Robinho? Veron? Carroll? The list goes on and on and on.

It's a fine list, and that's a fair point. It would be nice to see a larger body of work.
I see weak mentalities on that list, and a few situations that were the result of teams bidding against themselves to secure the player. It happens, no doubt about it.
Are we financially in the position where we can (or SHOULD) gamble 40m on a youngster who has proven nothing beyond 75% of a year where we're already seeing his production drop off? 2 goals in last ten matches and he's worth 40m? You're hoping Beppe can find a couple parts to include and seal this deal? Come on, let's be better than that? I'd rather miss out on Dybala and he becomes that 1 in a 100 youngster who has one good campaign, lives up to the hype and becomes a superstar than fro us to spend 40m on him and he becomes that 50 in 100 youngster who has one good campaign and becomes mediocre or that 48 in 100 youngster who has one good campaign and becomes average.
First of all, not a lot of 21 year old's are the 2nd most productive player in one of the top leagues, more than 3/4 of the way through the season -- so this isn't quite a 50 in 100 situation, or however you'd like to characterize that. You have to admit that this guy is a little bit more of an outlier than that, just based on his production alone. This is not a good season productivity wise, this is a great season.
Every big purchase is a gamble -- but you and I don't have the type of information about this player as those closer to the situation do, so it's a little harder to do an accurate risk assessment. As in, character/maturity level, training habits/lifestyle, etc. Can he handle the pressure that comes with the jersey, the money, the fame. When players flop, those are often big contributors -- as well as the inability to feel comfortable in a new environment/climate/culture, learn the language, etc... which Dybala already has on lock down.
I think it comes down to us just watching the game through different eyes. When I watch Dybala, I see a future superstar. I never saw that with Iturbe, and I haven't seen that yet when I've watched Berardi -- I haven't seen that at this point.
I could totally be wrong though, bud. In these discussions, in the end mostly just gotta go by what you see. We rate this guy differently, but that's what makes life interesting
