Drenthe Close To Catching Madrid Train
Real Madrid believe that they have taken the lead over Chelsea in the race to sign Holland starlet Royston Drenthe, but FC Barcelona are also in the frame.

The Feyenoord midfielder is giving out different signals as he hopes for a move to one of Europe's major clubs after an impressive display in the recent Under-20 European Championships.

After being told that both Madrid and the Blaugrana have been watching him, Drenthe made it clear which side he would prefer to join.

"My team is Feyenoord, but on an international level I have always been a fan of Barcelona," he said.

While Barça's interest has cooled after the coaching staff expressed their doubts about his ability to play at the highest level yet, Madrid are preparing an offer of €10m.

Los Merengues may well purchase the 20-year-old and then send him out on loan for a season, possibly even back to Feyenoord.

The news has swayed the player's opinion once again as he looks to impress the hierarchy at the Bernabéu.

"This type of train comes along one in your life and at 20 years of age I cannot afford to miss it," he said.

"It is Real Madrid. What if something happens in the next two years and they do not want me then?"

Drenthe's coach at Feyenoord last season, Erwin Koeman, has expressed his doubts that the player is ready for such a big move and has talked to Drenthe about his future.

With Madrid looking to make up ground quickly, president Ramón Calderón is keen to bring in the player on the advice of his technical staff.

"It seems that the transfer of Drenthe is going well and things should be closed within hours," he said.

"They tell me he is a fantastic player and I hope that everything is done fast."

Chelsea have placed a bid of €7.5m, but will have to increase that offer quickly if they want to have any chance of snatching Drenthe away from Madrid

Madrid Hoping For Cut-Price Drenthe Deal

As reported on Wednesday, Real Madrid are closing in on Royston Drenthe. Now, the Bernabeu club, despite competition from the Dutchman's favoured club of Barcelona, Los Merengues are confident of landing Drenthe at a discount price...

Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Royston Drenthe's mooted switch to Real Madrid is progressing very quickly, with Feyenoord close to reaching an agreement with the Galatico side.

However, the deal appears to be very much in Madrid's favour. Originally, a 10 million euro figure had been suggested, but sources close to the Bernabeu club suggest that the actual figure may be considerably less than that.

Drenthe is being groomed as the heir to Roberto Carlos' left back slot, but could also play on the left side of midfield if required.

Royston broke into the Feyenoord first team last season, racking up 29 impressive first team appearances in the midst of the Rotterdam club's disastrous campaign that saw them finish 7th.

    Barcelona Favourites To Land Drenthe

FC Barcelona believe that they have the upper hand in the race to sign Feyenoord starlet Royston Drenthe after allowing Gio Van Bronckhorst to join Dutch club.

Real Madrid are holding lengthy negotiations over a move for the Holland Under-20 international, but Barça could strike a deal behind their backs.

Feyenoord have struck up a good relationship with the Blaugrana after the Catalan giants rescinded Van Bronckhorst's contract to allow him to move back to De Kuip.

Drenthe has also stated in recent weeks that if he had the choice of joining any club in the world then Barça would be his first choice.

Madrid are keen to sign the player and then loan him out to another team in Spain for at least a season, but that deal is not as attractive.

FC Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has already told Feyenoord that if a deal is struck then he would allow Drenthe to stay with the Dutch outfit on loan.

The battle is also raging between the Catalan and Madrid media as Marca claim that the player's move to the Bernabéu is drawing close.

A deal of around €10m was said to have been agreed, but Feyenoord maybe prepared to accept a lower offer to help Drenthe move, the paper suggests.

Barça-biased Sport refute that and believe that Madrid's talks are taking longer than necessary because Feyenoord and the player would prefer he moved to Camp Nou.

Negotiations between Barça and the Dutch club are being held informally and will see Madrid ruled out of the equasion.

Chelsea Closing In On Deal For Drenthe

Chelsea are reported to have agreed a fee with Eredivisie side Feyenoord for the young Dutch midfielder Royston Drenthe - but Real Madrid still claim to be in pole position for the versatile 20-year-old, who can play anywhere along the left-hand side and was a star as Holland won the European Under-21 Championship in June.

Drenhe has also been linked with a move to any one of several clubs, including Barcelona and, most persistenly, Real Madrid, but Chelsea are thought to be closest to securing his signature, having had a £6.76 million offer accepted by Feyenoord - according to The Independent.

However, Feyenoord want to hang on to Drenthe for another season, and it is thought that Chelsea might agree to defer the deal.

Personal terms have yet to be negotiated with Drenthe.

Real Madrid claimed earlier today that they were confident of signing Drenthe, who has power and pace, and who has said he is unsure about his immediate future.

He told Spanish newspaper Marca: "Every footballer has dreams and I have mine.

"I can't tell more for the moment. When I signed with Feyenoord until June 2011, I already knew what my ambitions were."

With Chelsea winger Arjen Robben reportedly close to a transfer to Real Msdrid (despite Jose Mourinho saying he wants to keep the Dutchman at Stamford Bridge), Drenthe is not being seen as a replacement - although he successfully moved forward from left-back to left midfield for Feyenoord last season.
