Drenthe Close To Catching Madrid Train
Real Madrid believe that they have taken the lead over Chelsea in the race to sign Holland starlet Royston Drenthe, but FC Barcelona are also in the frame.
The Feyenoord midfielder is giving out different signals as he hopes for a move to one of Europe's major clubs after an impressive display in the recent Under-20 European Championships.
After being told that both Madrid and the Blaugrana have been watching him, Drenthe made it clear which side he would prefer to join.
"My team is Feyenoord, but on an international level I have always been a fan of Barcelona," he said.
While Barça's interest has cooled after the coaching staff expressed their doubts about his ability to play at the highest level yet, Madrid are preparing an offer of €10m.
Los Merengues may well purchase the 20-year-old and then send him out on loan for a season, possibly even back to Feyenoord.
The news has swayed the player's opinion once again as he looks to impress the hierarchy at the Bernabéu.
"This type of train comes along one in your life and at 20 years of age I cannot afford to miss it," he said.
"It is Real Madrid. What if something happens in the next two years and they do not want me then?"
Drenthe's coach at Feyenoord last season, Erwin Koeman, has expressed his doubts that the player is ready for such a big move and has talked to Drenthe about his future.
With Madrid looking to make up ground quickly, president Ramón Calderón is keen to bring in the player on the advice of his technical staff.
"It seems that the transfer of Drenthe is going well and things should be closed within hours," he said.
"They tell me he is a fantastic player and I hope that everything is done fast."
Chelsea have placed a bid of €7.5m, but will have to increase that offer quickly if they want to have any chance of snatching Drenthe away from Madrid
