Much better option on right wing, would've been even better if he had proper overlapping full back on the right. He's more dangerous on the right because he cuts, moves into channels, dangerous going forward, can play one-twos, etc. Can impact the game in more ways.

That’s still untrue. Costa is just as good on the left, the facts support it.

The thing is, right now we have Cuadrado, Bernardeschi and to some extent Dybala who all play on the right. We don’t need Costa on this side, we have enough depth already.

On the left we have Mandzukic, who is not even a real winger. That’s it, Pjaca is at Schalke now. We have no one else in that position.

Costa can make the left wing his own position. That’s much better than trying to spread gametime amongst 3 wingers for one position.

You are ignoring circumstance and the strikers he is playing with.

With Lewandowski he can be a great LW firing in crosses. The same would be true with prime Mandzu at CF.

With Higgy and Dybala who aren't anywhere near as adept on getting on the end of crosses, he's a better RW imo, because he has more choices and unpredictability as to what he will do on that side.

You are ignoring circumstance and the players he is playing with.

You have to look at this from a squad management point of view

If we convert Costa to right wing, he is in direct competition with Cuadrado and Bernardeschi. Cuadrado can’t play any position other than on the right. We then have 3 right wingers competing for one spot. At least two of them will be unhappy about their gametime, and one of them will ask to leave. Knowing Max, Berna will be the one who gets sacrificed. He will be reduced to Pjaca levels of gametime.

On the other side of the pitch we then have Mandzukic, a 32 year old who will get run into the ground (and stamina is one of his best traits). Not to mention that Mandzu isn’t particularly creative, so we will rely heavily on the overlapping runs of Sandro (who is also horribly out of form) to make anything happen.

Or we can avoid all these problems by playing Costa on the left...

yep, hes quick, can dribble and has a great cross, so he can be effective (on the counter mainly) playing left winger. but against organized teams that will close him the space he wants to attack when hes on that side (like vs Madrid last year, or Barca this year), he will be taken out of the game fairly easily, for obvious reasons - they will force him to cut inside where he wont be able to do much. doesent have the angle to shoot, cant cross/make through balls with his right while going right, and doesent have time and space to stop and dribble left again. on the right, hes still effctive if the opposition closes the path to the middle, as he can put in low crosses and backpasses with his right foot (much easier passes than through balls and crosses from 15-20 meters with his weak foot), and hes infinitely more dangerouns cutting in left because he has a strong shot from disatnce and can play-make from that area. that this has to even be explained is baffling

we are also overstacked at CB and thin in the middle, if we convert Barzagli into a DM we will have created enough playing time for Rugani who wont be unhappy and ask to leave. Barzagli is a underrated passer, his positioning is very good, and his quickness is still good despite age.

What I'm saying is that if we play Costa on the left, and Berna/Cuadrado on the left, Dybala is not the best option at CF. Costa is a crosser from that side. Dybala is not one to get on the end of crosses. Bernadeschi isn't a backpost option for those crosses either.

If we are playing with wingers like that, both Mandzu and Higgy are better CFs for it than Dybala. Higgy not as much because he only really suits low crosses. Prime Mandzu would be the perfect CF between Cuadrado and Costa on their crossing dominant sides. Dybala-Bernadeschi would waste Costa on the left.

yeah he really was. Gave Cuadrado and Licht a nightmare that game. However he was really good on the right in the 2nd leg aswell.

Yep, that’s what I’m saying. Costa is a beast on the left and the right. However, since we are way more stacked on the right, it makes sense to play Costa on the left.

I really need to find an individual highlight reel of Costa’s match against us at home. If I can find it, that would dispel the myth that he does nothing but cross from the left. His overall game was fantastic.

he only really became a LW under Pep and later Carlo, who had Lewa at CF (not 0.0001 inch vertical Gerardo), Coman who was never a RW was turned into one under Pep, it was obvious with Muller-Lewa in the middle what he wanted from his wings. Robben being world class still and playing regularly didnt help either. and again, just watch him play damn it, if you watch Juve and think Costa is a better LW than RW, then tell so right away, so i can stop taking you seriously once and for all
